Marion, Silveira, Barnhizer combine for 51 in Road Loss To Florida Tech.
Rollins College got a combined 51 points from the trio of Matheus Silveira, Kyle Marion, and Braxton Barnhizer but it was not nearly enough in a 96-73 road loss to Florida Tech at the Charles & Ruth Clemente Center. With the loss Rollins drops to 3-3 (0-1 SSC.) The Panthers improve to a perfect 6-0 on the season.
Barnhizer hit a pair of 3-pointer's in the games first 1:47 and the Tars led 6-1. Chase Thompson and Rashaan Edwards hit triples of their own to put the Panthers up 7-6. Barnhizer's third straight triple gave Rollins a 9-7 lead at the 16:55 mark of the first half. The lead was short-lived as a 3-pointer and a layup by Thompson put FIT ahead by a score of 12-9. Silveira and McCullough traded dunks before a Silveira jumper trimmed the Panthers lead to one (14-13) five minutes into this one. An Edwards 3-pointer gave the Panthers a seven point lead (24-17) at the 11:08 mark of the opening half. Cade Long went on a personal 5-0 run to make it a two point game (24-22) in favor of the home team. The hot shooting for FIT continued as they got a 3-pointer from Emmanuoil Dimou and a triple by Max Polk in transition made it an 11 point lead (35-24) for the Panthers. Jaden Frazier made a layup and Kyle Marion scored in transition on a jumper after a Cody Potter steal to cut the Rollins deficit to seven (35-28) with 6:50 until halftime. After Marion made a layup at the 2:44 mark of the half Rollins trailed by five (39-34.) The Panthers would finish the half with a flourish as they led 52-36 as the two teams headed to the locker room.
Rollins shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening half and hit 44 percent of their 3-point attempts (4-9.) The Tars shot 80 percent (4-5) from the free throw line.
FIT shot 66.7 percent from the field, a sizzling 52.9 percent (9-17) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (3-4) at the free throw line.
The Panthers lead was stretched to 19 early in the second half. Marion tried to keep the Tars in it with a 5-0 run of his own to cut the lead to 14 (61-47) after a layup with 15:57 to go. The next six points went to the Panthers and the lead was 20. The lead ballooned to 24 (73-49) on a 3-pointer by Edwards with 12:20 on the clock. The Tars went on a 7-0 run as Sergey Grisheav hit a jumper at the 8:40 mark. Rollins would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way as the Panthers won for the sixth straight time to open the season.
Marion added seven rebounds and six assists to go with his 21 points in the defeat. Silveria had 19 and Barnhizer added 11. Rollins shot 48.3 percent as a team, 43.8 percent (7-16) from the 3-point line, and 90.9 percent (10-11) from the free throw line. Rollins had 20 assists and 16 turnovers in the contest.
The Panthers were paced by Edwards with 22, McCullough added 21, Thompson netted 14, and Elias Martin tallied 11. The Panthers shot 55.7 percent from the field, 45.5 percent (15-33) from the 3-point line, and 86.7 percent (13-16) from the free throw line. Florida Tech won the rebounding battle 32-25. They had 23 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will remain on the road to close out this week. The Tars will take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on Saturday. Tip time from Rubin Arena is set for 4 PM.
