Fire Knock Off Tars.
The Rollins Tars had a big lead and barley hung on last night, the Tars looked like they had a little bit of carry over from the end of that one to the beginning of tonight's game. That would ultimately cost them in a 94-89 loss to the Southeastern Fire. With the loss the Tars fell to 4-2. The Fire stayed perfect at 6-0 on the season after the victory.
The teams traded baskets early in the first half. Neither team could find their rhythm offensively. Rollins lead 6-5 at the first media timeout of the contest, and then the game was tied at 12 at the under 12 timeout. After Rollins got 3-pointers from Cade Long and Cody Potter they led 20-19 with 9:35 in the first stanza. The Fire would see Riley Minix score the next five points to take a 24-20 advantage with 8:39 in the first stanza. After a Dayton Gumm jumper pulled the Tars within two the Fire went on a 8-0 run to take a 32-22 lead after a Regiie Messidor 3-pointer. Rollins would answer with a 3-ball by Gumm and would get a pair of Brooks Cluxton free throws but it would be a 12 point (42-30) deficit for the Tars late in the first half. A Hutton Yenor 3-pointer would cut the lead to single digits (42-33) as the teams headed to the locker room.
Rollins shot 48 percent in the opening half, while they shot 35 percent from the 3-point line (5-14) and went four of four at the free throw line. The Fire shot 45 percent from the field, and 39 percent (7-18) from the 3-point line. They were 1-2 at the free throw line.
After layups by Gumm and Kyle Marion the Tars were within five early in the second half. Once again the Fire would stretch the lead to double digits (51-41) after a Jordan Gorman 3-pointer. The lead was nine (58-49) but the Tars would go on a 6-0 run as a Yenor dunk would trim it to 58-55 with 13:07 to go. A Yenor free throw halfway through the half made it a three point game once again (65-62.) The lead went to six after another Fire 3-pointer but Long would hit back to back 3-pointer's and a pair of Cluxton free throws put the Tars on top 70-68. Another Long jumper at the 7:14 mark gave the Tars a two point lead (72-70) but knock down three consecutive triples the last one by Mesidor to make it 79-72 with 5:42 to go. The Tars would get to within four on several occasions, the last being with 37 seconds left after a Long 3-pointer. After two Fire free throws Long would drill another triple to make it 89-86 but the Fire would seal it at the free throw line.
