Marion Ignites Rollins To Road Win As Tars Stay Perfect.
Kyle Marion scored 21 of his 31 first half points to ignite the Rollins College Tars (3-0) to a 84-74 win over the Flagler Saints (1-2) at Flagler Gym on Tuesday night. Marion was one of five Tars in double figures on the evening.
It was a slow start for the Tars as it was Flagler that jumped out to a 18-8 lead after a pair of Callum Baker free throws at the 14:49 mark of the first half. The Tars would pull to within one (23-22) after a Marion jumper with 10:26 in the opening frame. After a Marion free throw tied the game at 33, Jaizec Lottie would knock down a 3-pointer to briefly put the Saint up by three, but the Tars would close the half on a 12-0 run as Marion would score five points, Dayton Gumm would make a layup and a 3-pointer before Cody Potter would score the last points of the half on a pair of free throws.
Marion would score his 21 points on 9 of 14 shooting in the first 20 minutes, while Gumm added eight points. Rollins shot 50 percent from the floor and 60 percent (6-10) from the 3-point line in the first stanza. They were a perfect three of three at the free throw line. As a team Rollins had nine assists and three turnovers in the half.
Flagler was led by Lottie with 12 points in the opening half, as he was 4 of 12 shooting in the opening half, he was the only Saints player in double figures, as Baker added eight. The Saints shot 38 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-22) from the 3-point line and two of two at the free throw line in the half. The Saints led on the boards 22-17 in the first 20 minutes, while they had nine assists, and nine turnovers in the first stanza.
The Tars picked up where they left off in the first half as they scored the first four points of the second half to make it a 16-0 run that turned a three point deficit into a 13 point lead after a Brooks Cluxton jumper with 19:10 to go. The lead would be trimmed to five (61-56) after a Kohl Roberts layup for Flagler with 12:49 remaining. Rollins would keep the Saints at arms length but the Saints got to within five once again (this time at 76-71 after a Lottie 3-pointer at the 4:25 mark. Hutton, Yenor, and Gumm would come up with big buckets late for the Tars, and a pair of Marion free throws sealed it to keep the Tars undefeated (3-0) on the young season.
Marion paced the Tars with 31 points, Potter added 15, Yenor scored 14, Gumm netted 12, and Cluxton tallied 10 with a game high 13 rebounds. The Tars shot 50 percent from the field, 44 percent (8-18) from the 3-point line, and 86 percent (6-7) from the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 42-41. The Tars had 14 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
The Saints were led by Lottie who scored 28 points, tallied eight rebounds, and dished out eight assists, Chase Fiddler netted 12, and Curtis Lewis added eight. Jalen Barr led the team in rebounding with 11 to go with his six points on the night. The Saint shot 38 percent from the field, 28 percent (13-46) from the 3-point line, and 70 percent (7-10) at the free throw line. Flagler had 18 assists and turned it over 14 times.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday when they travel to West Palm to take on Palm Beach Atlantic. Tip time is set for 7 PM.
