Tars Hang On Against Warner.
The Rollins College Tars jumped out to a big first half lead and hung on late for a 87-80 win over Warner to open a stretch of three games in three days at Warden Arena Monday. With the win the Tars improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Royals fall to 6-2 on the year.
Rollins came out of the gates hot at both ends as they would score the games first 12 points. After a pair of Hutton Yenor free throws it was 12-0 at the 16:15 mark of the opening half. After a Cody Potter 3-pointer at the 11 minute mark of the first half it was a 15 point advantage (25-10) for the home team. Kyle Marion would knock down a three of his own to make it 40-21 6:35 later. The biggest Rollins lead of the half was 22 (47-25) after a Will Erickson 3-pointer at the 2:08 mark of the half. The halftime score would be 47-29 in favor of the Tars.
The Tars were on fire in the opening half, as they shot 63 percent from the field, 75 percent (9-12) from the 3-point line, and 89 percent (8-9) at the free throw line. While they held the Royals to 41 percent shooting, and 20 percent (3-15) from the 3-point line, while the Royals missed the only free throw they attempted in the opening stanza.
After the Royals got to within 13 early in the second half the Tars would get 3-pointers on back to back possessions, one from Marion and the other from Erickson to make it 55-36 with 17:36 to go. The Tars looked to be in command up by 23 (75-52) after a Sergey Grishaev basket with 11:28 on the clock. The lead would grow to 25 (80-55) with 6:18 on the clock but the Royals would make it interesting. A 12-0 run capped by a Joe Martinez 3-pointer trimmed the lead to 13 (80-67) at the 3:52 mark. After Potter made a free throw the Tars went cold and the Royals would get to within six (81-75) after another 8-0 run. What once looked like a laugher was a six point game with 1:06 to go. The trio of Marion, Dayton Gumm, and Yenor would seal it for the Tars.
Marion paced the Tars with 24 points on 9-11 shooting from the field, and also had three assists. Yenor added 21, although he made just one 3-point field goal in this one. Potter added 12 points of his own. The Tars shot 54 percent from the field, 54 percent from the 3-point line (13-24) and 78 percent (14-18) at the free throw line.
Warner was led by 20 points and five assists from Martinez. Blaire Darling added 18 to go along with eight boards, Logan West tallied 13, and Darryl Mercer added 12. The Royals shot 48 percent from the field, 28 percent (8-29) from the 3-point line, and 83 percent (10-12) at the free throw line.
Rollins won the rebounding battle 33-31. Both teams took good care of the ball as Rollins had 23 assists, and 12 turnovers while the Royals had 22 assists and nine turnovers.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Tars as they will be back in action Tuesday when they host Southeastern University at Warden Arena. Tip time is set for 7:00 PM.
