Tars Open Season With Benedict, and Auburn Montgomery In South Region Tip Off.
The Rollins College Tars led by legendary coach Tom Klusman who enters his 41st season are excited to get back to some normalcy in the 2021-22 basketball campaign. Last season the Tars only played one game in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament after the regular season was cancelled due to COVID-19. The Tars fell to Florida Southern in that game, as Hutton Yenor had a career high 32 points in the defeat. Yenor, Kyle Marion, and Dayton Gumm are amongst the Tars returning for a team that was picked to finish eighth in the SSC Preseason poll. The Tars will open the season at 4:30 today (Friday) when they take on Benedict, before taking on Auburn Montgomery tomorrow (Saturday) at 4:30. Both games will be played at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Yenor averaged 12.9 points per game in the last full Rollins season back in the 2019-20 campaign. Gumm also averaged in double figures putting up 10.8 points per night.
The Benedict Tigers coached by Artis Maddox in his first season after three years at Florida Memorial played one exhibition game this season and fell 101-76 to the University of South Carolina. Tahj Green led four Tigers in double figures with 16 points, as he narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Malachi McCoy netted 13 points, Brandon Smith tallied 12, and Timothy Bing rounded out the double digit scorers with 11. Benedict shot just 36 percent from the field, 33 percent from the 3-point line, and 68 percent (17-25) from the free throw line. The Gamecocks on the other hand shot 56 percent from the field, and won the rebounding battle 49-36. The Tigers went 9-1 last season with the lone loss coming against Carson Newman. As a team the Tigers averaged 86.5 points per game while they allowed 78.3 per contest. The Tigers dominated the opposition on the glass winning the rebounding battle by more than 10 boards per contest (45.6-35.1). Another area the Tigers excelled in was points off turnovers, with 6.4 more than the opposition per night. Individually Green, who was the teams leading scorer at 17.1 points per game returns, along with Bing who put up 12.4 points per contest.
On Saturday the Tars will battle the WarHawks of Auburn-Montgomery. In the lone exhibition game AUM lost 101-70 to UAB. Isaiah Hart paced the WarHawks with 21 points, while Jeremiah Bozeman tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. AUM shot 38 percent from the field and the three point line in the defeat while they were out rebounded 54-45.
AUM was 3-14 in last season's pandemic shortened season. Bozeman is the teams top leading scorer at 8.6 points per game in 30 minutes per contest. Hart will be another key cog to this team as a DI transfer from Loyola (MD.) The WarHawks are led by Head Coach Michael Chaney in his eighth season.
