Cold Shooting Rollins Falls For Second Straight Day.
The Rollins Tars played for the second straight day in the Holiday Hoops Classic at the South Point Hotel and Casino. Today the Tars fell to Montana State Billings 59-40. With the loss Rollins drops to 6-6 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-7 with the win.
The Yellow Jackets had a five point lead early on before a Dayton Gumm 3-pointer made it a 12-10 Rollins deficit with just under 16 minutes to go in the opening half. After a 17-12 Yellow Jackets lead the Tars got a 3-pointer from Cody Potter. Billings would score the next seven points and stretch the lead to nine (24-15.) The two teams continued to struggle from the field as it was 29-22 Yellow Jackets at the half.
Rollins shot 33 percent from the field and 29 percent (4-14) from the 3-point line in the contest. Rollins did not take a trip to the free throw line in the opening stanza.
The Yellow Jackets shot 38 percent from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.
After a Malik Brikat basket Rollins went on a 8-0 run as Hutton Yenor hit a pair of 3-pointer's and Kyle Marion made a layup to cut the deficit to one (31-30) at the 17:10 mark. That would be as close as the Tars would get the rest of the way as they had five possessions to take the lead and could not convert. The lead for the Yellow Jackets was 12 (44-32) halfway through the second stanza. Gumm made a 3-pointer but a 7-0 spurt by the Yellow Jackets all but put this one away.
Rollins had a pair of double figures as Hutton Yenor scored 12 points (5-16) from the field to go along with four steals, while Gumm added 11 ((4-10 shooting) to go with four assists. Brooks Cluxton led the Tars on the glass with 11 rebounds. Rollins shot 33 percent from the field, 29 percent (8-28) from the 3-point line, and were 0 of four at the free throw line. They had 11 assists and 15 turnovers in the contest.
The Yellow Jackets had three players in double figures led by Carrington Wiggins with 13, Brikat netted 12, and Damen Thacker tallied 11. Billings shot 41 percent from the field, 27 percent (7-26) from the 3-point line, and 50 percent (4-8) at the free throw line. The Jackets dominated the glass 40-25. They had 15 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will take a break for the Holidays before they travel to Florida Southern on 12/31.
