Fourth Straight Win Is Upset Of #23 ERAU.
The Rollins Tars have now won four straight as they upset #23 Embry Riddle 89-82 at the ICI Center on Wednesday night. With the win the Tars are now 11-9 and have evened their conference mark at 6-6. The Eagles fall to 15-5 and 8-3 in the SSC.
Brooks Cluxton led four Tars in double figures with a game high 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds, six assists, and a block. Hutton Yenor tallied 22 including going seven of seven at the charity stripe to go with four assists and a pair of steals, Kyle Marion added 20 points and two steals, while Dayton Gumm had 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
Cluxton and Marion got the tars off to a 6-0 start before the Eagles cut it to 8-6. Gumm hit a 3-pointer and Cluxton scored to make it 15-10 Tars at the 13:17 mark of the half. After a Yenor hoop ERAU would score the next six points as a pair of Malcolm Whitlow free throws cut the Rollins lead to 17-16. Yenor and Gumm scored but then a 5-0 run by the Eagles knotted the game at 21 after a Romeo Crouch 3-pointer with 8:51 in the half. Elijah Jenkins would give the Eagles the lead on a 3-pointer but the Tars went on a 6-0 run of their own to go up 29-26 after a Yenor dunk with 4:54 in the half. ERAU would again tie the game, this time at 29 on a Danny Sully layup with 4:04 in the half. Rollins would run off the next seven points as Gumm scored before Marion knocked down a 3-pointer and a jumper to make it 36-29 with 2:03 left in the half. It would be 39-35 in favor of the Tars heading into the locker room.
Rollins shot 53 percent in the first half, 30 percent (3-10) from the 3-point line, and 67 percent (4-6) at the free throw line.
ERAU shot 41 percent in the opening stanza, 15 percent (2-13) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line in the half.
Jenkins knocked down a Eagles 3-pointer to cut the Tars lead to one but a Cluxton layup and a 3-pointer by Yenor made it 44-38 just over a minute into the second half. Jenkins hit another 3-pointer but Rollins would score the next five to go up 49-41 with 16:20 to go. A Crouch jumper at the 12:22 mark trimmed the Rollins lead to four before a pair of Sergei Grishaev free throws. Crouch again cut the lead to four (57-53) but the Tars responded with a pair of Cluxton free throws, a pair of Gumm free throws, and a Yenor dunk that turned into a three-point play that made it 64-53 with 10:50 to go. A 9-0 run by the Eagles in the next 1:40 cut the lead to two (64-62) after a Danny Sully layup with 9:10 on the clock. Cade Long would then go on a personal 5-0 run for the Tars. A Crouch 3-pointer for ERAU with 7:11 to go made it a 73-70 game. Marion and Cluxton quickly stretched the lead to seven in the next 60 seconds. Long made it 79-70 with five and a half minutes to go. The lead stayed at nine before a 5-0 run by the Eagles made it 83-79 after Crouch split a pair of free throws at the 1:02 mark. Rollins would hit six free throws down the stretch to salt away the upset.
As a team Rollins shot 59 percent from the field, 33 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line, and 88 percent (22-25) from the free throw line. They had 24 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest.
ERAU was paced by Crouch with 21, Whitlow chipped in 14, Jenkins netted 12, while Sully (11,) and Michael McCalister (10) also scored in double figures. ERAU shot 44 percent as a team, 29 percent (8-28) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (6-8) at the free throw line. They had 20 assists and nine turnovers in the contest. They also won the rebounding battle 37-31.
The Tars will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Melbourne to battle Florida Tech at the Clemente Center. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
