Marion Scores 35 For Undermanned Tars.
The Rollins Tars were coming off a big win on the road at Florida Southern on Friday. The new year dealt the Tars a tough blow at shoot around Sunday when the Tars learned they would have just eight available players after a player for Florida Southern tested positive on Friday. That was too much for the Tars to overcome Sunday as they fell 81-60 to Lynn at Warden Arena. With the win Lynn improved to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the SSC, while Rollins fell to 7-7 and 2-4 in the SSC after the loss.
Marion scored 35 points for the Tars in this one as he went 12-24 from the field, 6-10 from the 3-point line and a perfect five of five at the free throw line. Cody Potter had eight and Will Erickson seven for the short handed Tars. They shot 35 percent from the field, 36 percent from the 3-point line (9-25,) and 65 percent (11-17) from the free throw line. They had nine assists and 17 turnovers in the contest.
The Fighting Knights were paced by 31 points from Christian Peevy to go along with 12 rebounds, Brandon Bornelus and Alex Doane each tallied 14 for the visitors. Lynn shot 53 percent from the field, 40 percent (8-20) from the 3-point line, and shot at a 85 percent clip (11-13) from the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 38-28. The Fighting Knights had 13 assists and 16 turnovers in the contest.
Marion got off to a hot start early as he scored seven of the Tars first eight points as they had an early 12-8 lead. The Fighting Knights responded with a run of their own to take a 19-11 advantage. After a Marion 3-pointer cut it to five Lynn would score the games next 10 points to stretch the lead to 15. Lynn would lead by as many as 19 in the opening half and take a 40-24 lead into the locker room.
Rollins come out fighting in the second half as Marion hit a 3-pointer and an Erickson hoop trimmed the deficit to 11. At the 15 minute mark Rollins got to within eight (47-39) after 3-pointer's by Marion and Cody Potter at the 15 minute mark. After a layup by Potter at the 11:44 mark would cut the lead to seven Rollins would run out of gas late and ended with a 81-60 final score.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they take on a top five team in Nova Southeastern at Warden Arena. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
