Three Tars Score In Double Figures In Loss At Tampa.
The Rollins Tars got 22 points from Hutton Yenor, Kyle Marion added 16, and Cade Long had 15 in a 86-77 loss at the University of Tampa Wednesday night. With the loss Rollins falls to 7-9 and 2-6 in the SSC. Tampa improves to 10-3 and 6-2 in the SSC.
The Tars shot 44 percent from the field, 38 percent from the 3-point line (12-32) and 1-2 at the free throw line. They had 19 assists and eight turnovers in the contest.
Max Jones poured in a game high 30 points to lead the Spartans, Martin Lakovic put up 23 and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Derrick Felder had 20 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. The Spartans shot 49 percent from the field, 41 percent 11-27) from the 3-point line, and 56 percent (9-16) at the free throw line. The Spartans dominated the rebounding battle 46-32. They had 24 assists and 10 turnovers as a team.
After trailing early Rollins got back to back 3-pointer's by Marion to take a 14-13 lead with 16:06 in the opening half. Dayton Gumm would break a 16-16 tie with a three of his own and it was 19-16 Tars. UT would score the next nine points to take a 25-19 advantage. Rollins would then go on a 6-0 run capped by a Yenor layup to knot the game at 25 with 9:26 in the first stanza. Tampa would then go on a 9-0 surge to take a 34-25 lead. The Tars would score the next seven and after a Cody Potter 3-pointer it was 34-32 UT with 2:15 until halftime. It was 38-34 in favor of Tampa at the break.
Marion had 13 and Yenor 10 to lead Rollins in the opening half. The Tars shot 40 percent from the field and 29 percent (5-17) from the 3-point line in the first stanza. They were 1-2 at the free throw line and had eight assists along with four turnovers.
Lakovic had 14, Jones had 10, and Felder nine in the first half. UT shot 43 percent from the field, 39 percent (7-18) from the 3-point line, and 17 percent (1-6) at the free throw line. They had 13 assists and seven turnovers in the opening stanza.
The Tars got the lead back early in the second half after a Yenor 3-pointer and a Potter layup. The lead did not last long as the Spartans scored the next six points. Down 46-41 Rollins went on a 8-0 run as Potter hit a 3-pointer, Yenor had a layup, and Cade Long put the Tars on top 49-46 with 16 minutes to go. The game was again tied, this time at 59 with 10:39 to go after a Sergey Grishaev 3-pointer with 10:38 left. After the two teams traded baskets UT gained a five point advantage once again. A Long 3-pointer cut the Spartans lead to two (68-66) with 5:49 to go. Rollins would regain the lead 71-70 after a Yenor jumper with 4:44 to go. Long made a layup at the 3;59 mark and Rollins led 73-72. Back to back 3-pointers by the Spartans made it 78-73 UT. Rollins got to within three (80-77) on a Gumm layup with 1:06 left but those would be the last Rollins points of the game as the Spartans would close it out late.
