Four Tars Score In Double Figures In Loss to Tampa.
The Rollins College Tars had four players score in double figures but it was not enough as they fell 87-77 to the University of Tampa at Warden Arena on Wednesday night. With the loss Rollins falls to 14-12 and 9-9 in the SSC. After the victory Tampa improves to 14-8 and 9-7 in the SSC.
Kyle Marion got Rollins on the board first, they got a bucket from Brooks Cluxton, and another from Hutton Yenor to take a 8-5 lead early on. After a Dayton Gumm layup at the 16:07 mark of the half Rollins had a 12-9 advantage. Bryan Williams would then hit four straight triples and the Spartans would be ahead 21-14 with 10:27 in the opening stanza. After a De'Andre Harvey jumper at the 8:07 mark the UT lead would be double digits (26-16.) After a dunk and layup by Gumm at the 6:01 mark of the first half Rollins was within six (28-22.) The next four points would go to the Spartans and the lead would again be 10. At the half it would be 46-33 in favor of the Spartans.
Rollins shot 38 percent from the field and went just one of seven from the 3-point line in the opening stanza. They were also 8-10 at the free throw line.
Tampa shot 48 percent from the field, 47 percent (7-15) from the 3-point line, and were a perfect 11 of 11 at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. Tampa stretched it's lead to 16 (51-35) after a Tyson Leitao dunk with 18:25 to go. After a Mykah Brown jumper at the 16:42 mark the lead grew to 18 (56-38.) Rollins would go on a 8-0 run as Yenor would hit back to back 3-pointer's and Marion a pair of free throws to get the hosts within 10. The Spartans would score the next five points. A 3-pointer by Cade Long would again get Rollins within 10 but the Spartans would tally the next five points. The Tars would have a run of their own as Cluxton and Gumm would combine to go on a 9-0 run capped by a jam by each player to get the Tars within six (72-66) with 5:10 on the clock. After a Gumm basket followed by three Gumm free throws the Tars were within four (76-72) with 3:01 remaining. Gumm split a pair of free throws at the 1:24 mark and the Spartans got a 3-pointer Jones with 59 seconds to go that put them in control. The Spartans would make free throws down the stretch to close this one out.
Rollins was paced by Gumm with 22, Yenor added 21 to go with seven rebounds and five assists, Cluxton posted 17 with nine rebounds, and Marion tallied 12. The Tars shot 43 percent from the field, 22 percent (4-18) from the 3-point line, and 78 percent (21-27) from the free throw line. They had 11 assists and six turnovers in the contest.
Tampa was paced by Williams who had 23 points, seven assists and five rebounds, Jones added 21 including a perfect nine of nine at the free throw line, while Brown scored 20. Lakovic led the team with 13 rebounds to go with his nine points. The Spartans won the rebounding battle 34-29. They had 17 assists and 10 turnovers as they completed the season sweep of Rollins.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they travel to #1 Nova Southeastern. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
