Marion, Yenor Combine For 55 As Tars Fall At Eckerd.
The Rollins Tars got a combined 55 points from Kyle Marion and Hutton Yenor but it was not enough as they fell 87-82 to Eckerd at the MCArthur Center on the campus of Eckerd College. With the win Eckerd improves to 5-14 and 3-10 in the SSC. Rollins falls to 13-11 and 8-8 in the conference with the loss.
Rollins jumped out to an 11-4 lead after a Marion 3-pointer at the 16:39 mark of the opening frame. After a Sergey Grishaev jumper 3:06 later the lead was 11 (21-10.) The Tritons would responded with a 15-0 run that gave them a 25-21 lead after a pair of Daniel Love free throws with 9:20 in the opening half. Eckerd opened up a 10 point lead (36-26) as they got 3-pointer from Love and a pair of Mekhi Perry triples. After the two teams traded baskets to make it 40-28 the Tars would close the half on a 9-0 run capped by another Marion 3-ball that trimmed the Tritons deficit to 40-37 at the break.
Eckerd shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from the 3-point line (4-10) and were a perfect four of four at the free throw line in the opening stanza.
Rollins shot 48 percent in the opening 20 minutes, 50 percent (7-14) from the 3-point line and did not shoot a free throw in the opening half.
Yenor opened the second half with a triple that tied the game at 40. EC then regained the lead but the Tars would take a 47-45 advantage after a Dayton Gumm three-point play with 17:49 to go.The game was knotted at 50 when the Tritons went on another 5-0 run. The lead would stay at five for the next several minutes and Rollins would get to within two (67-65) after a Marion 3-pointer with 5:58 to go. A Yenor 3-pointer would give the Tars a 68-67 lead 47 seconds later. Marion knocked down another triple that made it 71-69 Rollins with 4:25 to go but a three point play by Leonard Okiti gave EC the lead back. Yenor and Love traded buckets as it was 74-73. A Love 3-pointer at the 1:36 mark expanded the lead to 79-75 EC. Rollins got to within two on a pair of occasions but that is as close as they would get as Eckerd hung on.
Marion led the way with 30 for Rollins while Yenor tallied 25. Brooks Cluxton added 13 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. The Tars shot 48 percent as a team, 44 percent (12-27) from the 3-point line and were a perfect eight of eight at the free throw line.
Eckerd was paced by GianFranco Garfals with 25, Love added 22, Kent Garard netted 15, and Okiti tallied 11. The Tritons shot 54 percent from the field, 35 percent (6-17) from the 3-point line, and 94 percent at the free throw line (11-12.) The game featured three ties and 11 lead changes.
