Rollins Uses Second Half Rally To Complete Season Sweep of Saint Leo.
The Rollins College Tars played the Saint Leo Lions Saturday at Warden Arena. Rollins would come away with an 87-84 win that completed the season sweep of the Lions as they erased a 12 point halftime deficit. With the win Rollins improves to 14-11 and 9-8 in the SSC. Saint Leo falls to 10-13 and 5-11 in the SSC after the defeat.
Rollins jumped out to an 11-5 lead nearly three minutes into this one. After four straight Lions points the Tars would go on a 11-0 run as Sergey Grishaev hit a pair of 3-pointer's as well as one by Cade Long, Brooks Cluxton also had a bucket during the stretch as Rollins led 22-9 with 13:52 in the opening stanza. Saint Leo would respond with an 8-0 run to trim the Tars lead to 22-17 after a Luke Haasl layup with 12:11 in the half. Saint Leo would knot the game at 28 after a 3-pointer by Malik Tyson and another Tyson triple would put the Lions in front. The Saint Leo lead would be eight (39-31) when the Tars the next four points. After the two teams traded triples it was a four point game and a Yenor basket cut the Saint Leo lead to two (42-40) with 3:58 in the half. The Lions hot shooting from distance in the first half continued as Wade Coomer hit 3 consecutive 3-ball's to open up at 11 point lead (51-40.) Commer added another three before halftime and it was a 54-42 Lions lead heading into the locker room. In the opening stanza the Tars were paced by Kyle Marion with 11 while both Yenor and Cluxton added seven. Cluxton also had eight rebounds in the first frame. The Tars shot 49 percent from the field, 45 percent (9-20) from the 3-point line and one of two at the free throw line in the opening stanza. Saint Leo was led by Griffin Rahming with 17 in the half while Coomer added 15. The Lions shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor and 50 percent (10-20) from the 3-point line in the half. They only shot 29 percent at the free throw line (2-7) in the first 20 minutes.
Rollins opened up the second half on a 11-0 run as a Cade Long layup would cut the Lions lead to one (54-53) with 17:15 left. The Lions would score the next four points, then it was the Tars who knotted the game at 58 after a Dayton gums 3-pointer with 13:37 on the clock. The two teams would go back and forth for a few minutes before Rollins took a 68-67 lead on a free throw by Yenor. After the game was again tied, this time at 73 Rollins would go on a 7-0 run to take a 80-73 lead with under four minutes to go. A long 3-pointer gave the Tars a eight point lead (83-75) The Tars would make enough free throws down the stretch to close this one out.
Rollins had five players score in double figures in this one. Yenor paced the squad with 25 as he played all 40 minutes in this game. Gumm netted 17, Long scored 16, Marion tallied 12 to go along with seven assists, and Cluxton contributed 11 to go with 13 rebounds. Rollins shot 52 percent in the contest, 41 percent (12-29) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line. The Tars had 21 assists and 17 turnovers in this one.
The Lions were paced by Coomer who knocked down nine 3-pointer's on his way to 27 points, while Rahming added 23. Saint Leo shot 47 percent from the field, 39 percent (14-36) from the 3-point line and 50 percent (8-16) at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 40-29. They had 20 assists and 20 turnovers in the game.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they host the University of Tampa. Tip time is slated for 7:30 PM.
