Tars Get Back In Win Column As They Upset #22 Barry Again!
The Rollins College Tars did it again. They completed the season sweep of #22 Barry as they ended the game on a 6-0 run to come away with a 80-75 win at the Sport and Health Center in Miami Shores. With the win Rollins improves to 13-10 and 8-7 in the SSC. Barry after the loss falls to 14-5 and 9-5 in the SSC.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as the first basket of the game did not occur until a layup by Justinas Marcinkevicius but the Tars got a dunk by Dayton Gumm to get on the board them. Sergey Grishaev knocked down a 3-pointer to give Rollins a 13-11 lead nearly seven minutes in. Nick Anderson would answer with back to back 3-pointer's for Barry and the Bucs took a six point lead halfway through the opening stanza. Cade Long would tie the game at 25 with a 3-pointer at the 5:08 mark of the opening half. The next four points would go Barry's way but Rollins would again answer. This time a Brooks Cluxton three-point play with 1:09 in the half put Rollins up 32-31. The Tars would take a 37-35 lead into the locker room. Grishaev led the Tars with 11 in the opening half, Yenor netted eight, and Long had seven. The Tars shot 42 percent from the field, 39 percent from the 3-point line (5-13) and 75 percent (6-8) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
Barry was paced by Marcinkevicius with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. He was followed by Anderson with six. As a team the Buccaneers shot 36 percent from the field, 20 percent (3-15) from the 3-point line, and 67 percent (4-6) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.
The two teams went back and forth early in the second half. The game was knotted at 50 after a Yenor 3-pointer at the 15:18 mark Another Yenor 3-ball gave Rollins the lead and he scored again after a Barry hoop.A layup by Yenor after a Grisaev steal gave Rollins a seven point lead (63-56) with 9:35 to go. Barry would go on a 10-0 run capped by a Jake Kakar dunk to give them a 66-63 lead with 6:27 remaining. Kyle Marion would go on a 5-0 run to give the Tars the lead back. After Barry tied it again on a pair of Landon Kirkwood free throws a Dayton Gumm jumper gave Rollins the lead 70-68. Marcinkevicius tied it at 7- but a Yenor jumper gave Rollins a 72-70 lead with 2:58 left. Yenor hit a pair of free throws to stretch the Rollins lead to four. (74-70.) A jumper by Toru Dean and a pair of Marcinkevicius free throws again tied the game, this time at 74. Michael Schaefer split a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left and Barry had a 75-74 lead. Gumm hit a pair of free throws to give Rollins the lead back with 44 ticks on the clock. Rollins got a couple stops late and finished possessions with rebounds as a Cluxton layup with nine seconds left gave them a three point lead and Marion sealed it with a pair of free throws to complete the season sweep of the nation's 22nd best team.
Rollins was led by Yenor who had 18 of his 26 points in the second half. Grishaev added 15, Long tallied 11, and Gumm had 10. Cluxton narrowly missed a double-double as he had nine points and 10 rebounds. The Tars shot 48 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-22) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line. They had 20 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest.
Barry was led by 22 from Marcinkevicius, Kakar scored 14, and Dean netted 10. They shot 40 percent from the field, 21 percent (6-29) from the 3-point line, and 77 percent (13-17) at the free throw line. Barry won the rebounding battle 47-30. They had 19 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Saint Pete to take on Eckerd. Tip time is slated for 7:30 at the McArthur Center.
