Tars Win Streak Snapped At Five.
The Rollins Tars came into Wednesday riding high on a five game win streak. They could not extend it to six as they fell 81-77 to Florida Southern at Warden Arena, as the Mocs gained the split in the season series. Rollins with the loss falls to 12-10 and 7-7 in the SSC. Florida Southern improves to 10-12 and 7-7 in the SSC after the victory.
The Tars scored the first five points of the game on a Brooks Cluxton basket and a 3-pointer by Kyle Marion. Another Marion 3-pointer at the 15:10 mark of the first half gave the Tars a 12-8 lead. Rollins would extend the lead to double digits (22-12) after Hutton Yenor split a pair of free throws at the 11:52 mark of the opening half. Marion's third triple of the half gave Rollins a 25-14 lead halfway through the opening stanza. Marion would again connect from long distance and give the Tars a 30-19 advantage with 8:18 in the opening half. The Rollins lead would be 12 (34-22) before AJ Damberville knocked down back to back 3-pointer's. Another 3-pointer by Damberville with five minutes to go in the opening stanza would trim the Rollins lead to three (36-33.) A Dayton Gumn dunk would stretch the lead to five but the Mocs would regain the lead spurred by a 7-0 run on a Xavier Rhodes layup. Marion would make a pair of free throws and the Tars would go back in front on a Yenor layup with 2:04 in the opening half. A Rhodes layup tied it but a 3-pointer by Yenor gave Rollins a 45-42 halftime lead. Rollins shot 55 percent from the field, 55 percent from the 3-point line (6-11) and 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line in the opening stanza. The Mocs shot 49 percent from the field, 38 percent (5-13) from the free throw line and 30 percent (3-10) at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.
The Mocs scored the first six points of the second half before a Yenor hoop. Rollins was down 56-55 before Yenor went on a personal 8-0 run. He scored to give the Tars the lead back, stole the ball and nailed a triple, then hit another 3-pointer. Brooks Cluxton made it 65-56 on the ensuing possession with 11 minutes left in the contest. Then it was Damberville who scored the next five points to get FSC within four. Jadin Booth hit a Mocs 3-pointer at the 5:24 mark that knotted the game at 68. Two Marion free throws briefly put the Tars on top but it was 71-70 Mocs after Rhodes split a pair of free throws with 4:11 to go. The Tars scored the next four points to take a 74-71 lead. Luke Anderson knocked down a triple for FSC that tied the game at 74 with exactly three minutes on the clock. Each team would split a pair of free throws and the game was again tied, this time at 75. Gumm split a pair of free throws for the Tars and Booth hit both from the line to give the Mocs a 77-76 lead with 1:06 remaining. Luke Anderson made two free throws to stretch the FSC lead to three. Yenor would split a pair of free throws for the Tars with seven seconds left and two Rhodes free throws iced it for the Mocs with five seconds on the clock.
Yenor paced the Tars with 27 points, five assists, and a pair of blocks in this one. Marion knocked down five 3-pointer's on his way to 19 points, while Cluxton tallied 15 to go with 18 rebounds. The Tars shot 45 percent from the field in the contest, 43 percent (9-21) from the 3-point line, and 70 percent (16-23) from the free throw line. They had 20 assists and 15 turnovers in the game.
The Mocs were led by Damberville who poured in 26 points, Wes Bongiorno tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Rhodes added 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Luke Anderson netted 13. The Mocs shot 44 percent from the field, 37 percent (10-27) from the 3-point line, and 60 percent (15-25) at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 41-38. The Mocs had 21 assists and 14 turnovers in the game.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Miami Shores to take on #22 Barry. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
