Rollins Falls To Barry In SSC Quarterfinals.
The Rollins Tars held a 20-7 lead at one point on Tuesday, led by nine (37-28) at halftime but were out scored 51-27 in the second half as they were defeated 79-65 by Barry in the SSC Quarterfinals at the Barry Health and Sports Center.
A Kyle Marion 3-pointer gave Rollins a 7-5 lead more than three minutes into this one. This would be the start of a 16-2 Rollins run that opened up the largest lead of the game, 20-7 after a Hutton Yenor three-point play at the 12:20 mark of the first half. Barry would score the next eight points to pull within five (20-15) before Cody Potter came off the Rollins bench to knock down a 3-pointer and another basket that stretched the Tars lead back to double digits (25-15) with 7:40 to go until halftime. After a quick 4-0 Barry run the Tars again stretched the lead to 10 (29-19) after a Brooks Cluxton layup with 4:30 in the half. A Kyle Marion triple put the Tars up 11 (32-21) 45 seconds later. A Marion 3-pointer at the 2:19 mark gave Rollins a 12 point advantage (37-25) with 2:19 until halftime. A 3-pointer by Nick Anderson would be the last basket of the half as Rollins led 37-28 going into the locker room.
Marion led the Tars with 15 in the opening half, while Cluxton added nine to go along with five rebounds. The Tars shot 52 percent from the field, 50 percent (5-10) from the 3-point line, and 2-2 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. They had 11 assists and five turnovers in the opening stanza.
Barry was led by Michael Schaefer with eight points in the first half, while Jake Kakar scored seven. They shot 34 percent from the field in the opening half, 24 percent (4-17) from the 3-point line, and went 2-2 at the free throw line. The Buccaneers led on the glass 17-15. They had seven assists and six turnovers in the half.
Landon Kirkwood and Yenor traded baskets to start the second half before a Kirkwood 3-pointer followed by a Kakar triple pulled Barry within two (39-37.) A Yenor jumper made the lead four but that would be short lived as Barry would go on a 6-0 run as a Justin Marcinkevicius layup put Barry on top 43-41. Yenor knotted the game at 43 with a jumper at the 15:39 mark. Barry would take control of the game as they went on a 11-0 run capped by a Marcinkevicius layup that made it 54-43 Buccaneers with 10:17 remaining. Two Cluxton free throws and a 3-pointer by Marion pulled Rollins within six (54-48.) Another 6-0 run by Barry capped by a James Montgomery hoop gave the Buccaneers a 60-48 lead with 7:57 left. Yenor hit a jumper the next trip down but a 3-pointer by Anderson again stretched the lead to double digits (63-50.) After two Marion free throws Rollins trailed by eight (65-57) with 4:50 to go but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Anderson was followed by a pair of Yenor free throws that made it a nine point game (68-59) with 3:09 on the clock. A Kakar dunk all but put this one away. A CLuxton layup got the Tars within single digits again (70-61) with two minutes to go but that was the last ditch effort for the visitors. The final would be 79-64 as the Buccaneers would beat the Tars for the first time in three tries this season.
Marion paced the Tars, as he scored 15 of his 20 points in the opening half. Yenor scored 16 of his 19 points in the second stanza as he added seven rebounds, while Cluxton tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Rollins shot 39 percent from the field (9-33 second half,) 33 percent from the 3-point line (7-21,) and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line. The Tars had 13 assists and 10 turnovers in the contest.
Barry was led by five players in double figures. Schaefer led the way with 17 points, Kakar had 14, Anderson knocked down four triples on his way to 12 points, while both Marcinkevicius and Kirkwood each had 11. The Buccaneers shot 49 percent from the field (62 percent second half,) 31 percent (9-29) from the 3-point line and 60 percent (6-10) from the free throw line. Barry dominated the rebounding battle winning the boards 46-25. They had 24 assists and 16 turnovers in this one.
Barry improves to 19-7 on the year and will face Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach on Thursday night. The Tars season concludes with a 14-15 record.
