Tars Hold Off Pesky Vaqueros.
The Rollins Tars improved to 2-2 on the season after a 92-79 win over a pesky Puerto Rico Bayamon squad that fell to 0-2 on the year inside Warden Arena on Monday night. Rollins had four players score in double figures on the night, while Bayamon saw Bryan Gonzalez score 49 of the teams 79 points.
Rollins scored the games first five points as Matheus Silviera hit a jumper and Hutton Yenor knocked down a 3-pointer. The Vaqueros would respond with the next six points as Gonzalez would score on an old fashioned three-point play and then knock down a conventional triple. The first of his eight triples on the night. The game would go back and forth, after a pair of Gonzalez free throws it was tied at 18 at the 12:18 mark of the opening half. Gonzalez knocked down his fourth 3-pointer but Cam Corcoran would hit one of his four triples for the Tars to knot the game at 21. Rollins would open up an eight point lead (33-25) as Corcoran hit another 3-pointer with 7:44 in the half. The lead was 10 (39-29) after a Kyle Marion free throw with 4:21 in the half. Bryant Rodriguez made a layup for the Vaqueros and it was a six point game (39-33.) Silveira hit a pair of free throws and Cody Potter made a 3-pointer to expand the lead to 11 (44-33) with just under three minutes to go in the opening half. Rollins would take an 11 point lead (47-36) into the locker room.
Rollins came out in the second half as Potter would hit back to back 3-pointer's early in the half to put the Tars up by 14 (54-40) with 18:17 to go. Gonzalez made another three but Potter would hit his third in the first 2:05 of the second half to stretch the lead back to 14. After a Corcoran 3-pointer at the 11:01 mark the Tars would lead by 22 (74-52) but the Vaqueros would not go away. Gonzalez would score six of eight points on a 8-0 run for Bayamon as Yadiel Harrison would make it 82-69 with 5:29 on the clock. Harrison would make another basket at the 4:13 mark and the lead was again 11 (84-73) but that would be as close as the Vaqueros would get as the Tars closed out the home win.
Rollins got 18 points each from Yenor and Potter. Yenor added nine rebounds and five assists, while Potter had seven boards. Cade Long and Corcoran each had 12. As a team Rollins shot 49.2 percent from the field, 45.2 percent (14-31) from the 3-point line, and 69 percent (20-29) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 46-26. They had 20 assists and 23 turnovers in the contest.
The Vaqueros were led by Gonzalez who was 16-26 from the floor, eight of 14 at the 3-point line, and nine of 10 at the free throw line. He also added five steals. Harrison scored nine, and Marco Velez tallied eight. As a team the Vaqueros shot 41.5 percent from the field, 31 percent (9-29) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (16-20) at the free throw line. They had 15 assists and 15 turnovers on the night.
The Tars will be back in action Wednesday when they take on Southeastern. Tip time at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center is set for 3 PM.
