Cold Shooting Dooms Rollins In Vegas.
The Rollins College Tars struggled shooting the ball all afternoon in the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas and ultimately lost 59-57 to the #21 Dominican University Chargers. With the loss Rollins drops to 4-5 on the season. The Chargers improved to 10-1 after another narrow victory.
Both teams came out ice cold from the floor as Rollins would lead 4-0 at the first media timeout of the contest. After the Charger tied the game Rollins went back on top after a hoop by Kyle Marion. Rollins would lead by six (18-12) after a four point play by Cade Long. After a Marion old fashioned three point play Rollins took a six point lead (28-22) into the locker room.
The Chargers came out firing in the second half as Rollins had trouble taking care of the ball in the early stages of the second stanza. It would be a nine point Dominican lead (37-28) as they punctuated a 15-0 run. A Long bucket trimmed the lead to seven (37-30.) A free throw by Marion and jumper by Hutton Yenor made it a six point Dominican lead. Yenor made four consecutive free throws and Rollins was right back in it. After a three by Chargers Rollins got a triple by Yenor and then a3-pointer by Long trimmed the lead to one. Two free throws by Yenor put Rollins on top 48-47 with 5:47 on the clock. Justin Copman would score the next four points on a jumper and a dunk to put the Chargers back up by three (51-48.) Rollins got a pair of free throws by Yenor and Matheus Silviera split a par at the stripe to knot the game at 51. Four free throws by Dominican put the Chargers up 55-51 with 1:40 to go. After a string of stops Rollins could not convert at the other end and it would be a 59-57 win for the Chargers.
Rollins would led by Yenor with 21, Long added 13, and Marion scored 11. Rollins shot a frigid 32 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (4-12) from the 3-point line, and were 21-29 (72.4 percent) at the free throw line. The Tars had nine assists and 17 turnovers in this one.
The Chargers were paced by Copman with 16, Joshua Serano added 11, and Seth Sharif-Brown tallied nine to go with 13 rebounds. The Chargers shot 38.3 percent from the field, 26.7 percent (4-15) from the 3-point line, and 79.2 percent (19-24) from the free throw line. The Chargers won the rebounding battle 38-32. They had 17 assists and 21 turnovers in this one.
Rollins will be back in action tomorrow when they close out the Holiday Hoops Classic when they take on #7 Missouri-St.Louis. Tip time is slated for 3:15 PM.
