Big Second Half Powers Rollins Past Florida Tech.
The Rollins College Tars used a big second half on both ends of the floor to outscore Florida Tech 38-24 and ultimately pull away for an 81-60 win at the Clemente Center. With the win Rollins improves to 10-10 and 6-6 in the SSC. The Panthers fall to 14-7 and 7-6 in the conference.
Rollins scored the games first four points before the next five went the way of the Panthers. Then the see-saw battle ensued until a 6-0 Tars run capped by a Kyle Marion jumper made it 14-9 in favor of the visitors. The Tars stretched the lead to eight (25-17) on a Cody Potter 3-pointer with 8:50 to go until halftime. Back to back 3 pointers, the latter by Sean Houpt trimmed the Rollins lead to two (25-23.) Rollins would maintain the lead for the rest of the half as a Cade Long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer gave Rollins a 43-36 lead at the intermission.
The teams trade baskets to start the second half but then Rollins on a 12-0 run capped by a Hutton Yenor triple to make it 57-41 Rollins with 14:25 to go. Sergey Grishaev would make an and one as well as layup to put the Tars up 17 (64-47) with 10:53 remaining. The lead would grow to 20 (72-52) on a Cam Corcoran 3-pointer with 7:33 on the clock. The Panthers would get to within 17 but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way as the Tars gained the split of the season series.
Yenor nearly tallied a triple-double with 17 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in the contest. Silveira and Grishaev each netted 15, while Long tallied 10. Rollins shot 54.4 percent from the field, 52.6 percent (10-19) from the 3-point line and 75 percent (9-12) at the free throw line. They dominated the glass 38-22. The Tars had 27 assists and 16 turnovers in the contest.
Mekhii Noble led Florida Tech with 13 points, Houpt added 12, and Josh Mims chipped in nine. The Panthers shot 38.2 percent from the field, 28.6 percent (8-28) from the 3-point line and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. They had 17 assists and 12 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to the University of Tampa. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
