Three In Double Digits As Rollins Falls At Home.
For whatever reason can't quite take advantage of the home court advantage at Warden Arena in the 2022-23 season. After leading by five at halftime, the Tars fell 71-61 to Florida Tech as they dropped to 2-3 at home for the year. With the loss Rollins who had three players score in double figures fell to 5-7 and 2-3 in the SSC. The Panthers improved to 11-3 and 4-2 in the SSC after the victory.
The two teams went back and forth in the early going. After a Sesan Russell 3-pointer at the 16:35 mark Florida Tech had an 8-5 advantage. Over the next five minutes Florida Tech would not score a point as Rollins would go on a 9-0 run to take a 14-8 lead after a layup by John Latimer. They would also get a bucket by Kyle Marion and basket as well as a 3-pointer by Cam Corcoran during the run. Corcoran got the start on Sunday in place of leading scorer Hutton Yenor who missed the game with an injury. The Panthers would fight back and retake the lead at 17-16 after a Sean Houpt 3-pointer at the 9:07 mark of the opening half. The next six points would go the way of the Tars to go back up five (22-17.) The Panthers would respond with the next seven points and took a 24-22 lead after another Russell triple. The Tars would finish the half on another run as they would take a 33-28 lead into halftime.
The Panthers would come out with a 6-0 run to start the second half and regained the lead 34-33 after a Mekhii Noble jumper with 18:17 on the clock. The teams would stay on the same for the next several minutes. After a 3-pointer by Cade Long Rollins went back in front 43-42 with 12:40 to go. The Panthers would stretch the lead to eight 55-47 after a Houpt hoop with 7:28 left. A 3-pointer by Potter would get the Tars within five but a quick answer by Houpt would make it 58-50 with 5:23 to go. Rollins went on a 6-0 run to get to within two (58-56) as Latimer split a pair of free throws with 3:59 left. It was 61-58 Florida Tech and Rollins would have a chance to tie the game on a 3-pointer by Potter but it was off the mark. Niall Harris would make a layup on the ensuing possession and the Panthers would be solid at the free throw line to take the 71-61 win.
Corcoran led the Tars with 13, Long added 12, and Silveira netted 10 in the defeat. Already without Yenor the Tars lost Marion to an injury in this one. Rollins shot 38.1 percent from the field, 23.1 percent (6-26) from the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (7-8) at the free throw line. They had 14 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest.
The Panthers were paced by Houpt who had a game high 23 points, Russell added 14, Harris scored 13, and Noble tallied 10. The Panthers shot 45.6 percent as a team, 29.2 percent (7-24) from the 3-point line, and 85.7 percent (12-14) at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 41-30.
