Late Rally Pushes Rollins Past ERAU.
The Rollins College Tars used a late rally to knock off the Embry-Riddle Eagles 78-74 at the ICI Center on Wednesday night. With the win Rollins improves to 14-13 and 10-9 in the SSC. ERAU falls to 17-9 and 10-9 in the SSC after the defeat.
Both teams got off to slow start offensively. Rollins would finally get on the board after a John Latimer 3-pointer at the 17:58 mark. Yenor hit back to back jumpers to pull Rollins within four (11-7) at the 16:02 mark of the first half. The next six points went to the Eagles before a Cam Corcoran triple made it 17-10 ERAU with 11:47 left in the opening half. Down 24-15 at the 7:59 mark Rollins went on a 6-0 run and trailed 24-21 after a Yenor jumper with 5:30 until halftime. The two teams traded buckets, then Kyle Marion hit a jumper and then Matheus Silveira hit back to back buckets to give Rollins a 29-26 lead with 1:42 until halftime. The next five points went the way of the Eagles but Latimer hit a big triple to give Rollins the lead back with 19 ticks until halftime. Malcolm Whitlow hit a 3-pointer of his own and ERAU took a 34-32 lead into halftime.
Rollins shot 44 percent in the opening half, 33 percent (4-12) from the 3-point line, and missed the only free throw they attempted in the stanza.
The Eagles shot 43 percent from the field, 21 percent (3-14) from the 3-point line and 5-5 at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.
Marion would tie the game with a jumper but the next five points went the way of the Eagles. ERAU would lead by seven (49-42) five minutes into the second stanza. After a Dru Nickson 3-pointer at the 9:44 mark ERAU held a 12 point edge (64-52.) The lead would grow to 14 (68-54) after two Chris Murray free throws. It was 70-58 when Rollins went on a 5-0 run as Yenor hit a jumper and was fouled. He converted the free throw to make it 70-63 at the 5:14 mark. After a Murray layup 18 seconds later the Tars deficit was nine. Marion hit a pair of free throws and Latimer hit a jumper after a Marion steal with 3:41 to go. Nikola Jerotic hit a jumper to make the Tars deficit seven (74-67) with 3:10 on the clock. Latimer hit a jumper and Matheus Silveria scored to cut the ERAU lead to three (74-71.) Latimer hit a free throw and then Yenor knocked down a clutch jumper at the 58 second mark that knotted the game at 74. After a defensive stop Marion hit what proved to be the game wining jumper with 15 ticks remaining. Rollins got one more stop on the defensive end and Yenor sealed it with a pair of free throws. Rollins held the Eagles scoreless in the last 3:10 to secure the victory.
Yenor stuffed the stat sheet Wednesday night as he had 17 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and a steal. Latimer notched 15, while both Marion and Silveira netted 14, Rollins shot 52 percent from the field, 24 percent (4-17 )from the 3-point line and 80 percent (12-15) at the free throw line. The Tars had 24 assists and seven turnovers in the contest.
ERAU was paced by Murray who had 21 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Whitlow added 16 and Wesley Simpson tallied 10. Dru Nickson dished out a team high 10 assists. ERAU shot 44 percent from the field, 27 percent (8-30) from the 3-point line, and 88 percent (14-16) at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 36-30. They had 23 assists and 12 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will close the regular season on Saturday when they host Palm Beach Atlantic. Tip time from Warden Arena is set for 4 PM.
