Tars Slip past Tritons As Silveira Leads Way.
Matheus Silveria scored 24 points on 10-11 shooting while he also added 10 rebounds and five blocks as the Rollins College Tars slipped past the Eckerd College Tritons 82-76 at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center on Saturday. With the win Rollins improves to 13-13 and 9-9 in the SSC. Eckerd falls to 9-15 and 6-12 in the SSC after the loss.
The two teams traded blows in the early going until Eckerd would take a 13-7 lead after a pair of Carr Thiem free throws at the 14:47 mark of the opening half. Rollins would battle back and knot the game at 17 after a pair of Hutton Yenor baskets. After Cade Long made a pair of free throws and a layup by John Latimer Rollins took a 21-17 lead with 8:24 to go until halftime. Silviera would go to work in the paint but Thiam and Mekhi Perry would hit back to back triples to give the Tritons a 32-28 lead. Yenor hit a pair of free throws and then Marion made a 3-pointer to put Rollins back up at 33-32 with 3:09 in the first half. Perry hit another three to put EC on top but Yenor would score the next four points. After a pair of Marion free throws right before halftime Rollins was on top 39-37 headed into the locker room. Rollins shot 50 percent in the first half, 25 percent (1-4) from the 3-point line, and 86 percent (12-14)) at the free throw line in the opening stanza. The Tritons shot 41 percent from the field, 30 percent (5-17) from the 3-point line, and converted both free throws they attempted in the first 20 minutes.
Thiam hit a 3-pointer to open the second half scoring but Rollins got back to back baskets from Marion and Long to take the lead back. A triple by Thiam tied it and then we were on the see-saw. Back to back Daniel Love triples and a free throw by Jordan Kwiecinski gave the Tritons a five point lead (52-47.) After a 3-pointer by Long and a Silveria basket the Tars retook the lead 64-63 with 7:17 to go. The lead would change hands four more times and a dunk by Latimer gave Rollins a four point lead (71-67) at the 4:33 mark. A Silveria basket at the 2:35 mark would stretch the Tars lead to six. They would make enough free throws down the stretch to close this one out.
Rollins was paced by Silveria, he was joined in double figures by Marion who had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Yenor who had 18, and Long who came off the bench to score 12. As a team Rollins shot 47 percent from the floor, 27 percent (4-15) from the 3-point line, and 83 percent (24-29) from the free throw line. They had 19 assists and 18 turnovers in the contest.The Tars dominated the glass 47-28 in this one.
Eckerd shot 43 percent from the field, 31 percent (10-32) from the 3-point line, and 67 percent (4-6) at the free throw line. They had 19 assists and 10 turnovers in this one. They were paced by Thiam with 20, Love had 14, and Kent Garard notched 12.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Embry-Riddle. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
