Eagles Sink Tars In SSC Semis.
The Embry-Riddle Eagles took control of the game early and never looked back as they sunk the Rollins College Tars 80-63 in the Sunshine State Conference Semifinals on Thursday night at the ICI Center in Daytona Beach. Rollins season concludes with a 15-15 record. ERAU(19-10) advances to the SSC Final at 1 PM on Sunday where they will travel to #1 Nova Southeastern, who outlasted Florida Tech in overtime in the other Semifinal.
ERAU scored the first six points of the contest before Kyle Marion put the Tars on the board with a jumper at the 16:37 mark of the opening half. After a Hutton Yenor jumper at the 12:07 mark of the half Rollins was within five (15-10.)After Jon Allesandro knocked down a triple the Eagles had a 16 point advantage (32-16) with 5:21 until halftime. A jumper by Jaden Frazier was answered by 3-pointer's by both Allesandro and Dry Nickson which swelled the lead to 20 (38-18) with 4:06 until halftime. The Rollins deficit would be 19 (46-27) headed to halftime. Rollins shot 39 percent from the floor, 30 percent (3-10) from the 3-point line and went a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
The Eagles shot 53 percent from the floor, 47 percent (7-15) from the 3-point line, and 33 percent (1-3) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.
Rollins showed some fight to start the second half as they went on a 7-0 run. After Matheus Silveira scored the Tars were within 12 (46-34.) The next five points went the way of the Eagles but again the Tars responded. Jon Latimer knocked down a 3-ball and Yenor hit back to back baskets to cut the ERAU lead to 10 (51-41) with 13:38 on the clock. After Latimer hit another 3-pointer at the 12:30 mark Rollins cut the lead to single digits (53-44.) Chris Murray and Yenor traded baskets and it was still a nine point game. A 6-0 run by ERAU stretched the lead back to 15. Rollins would make one last push. After Kyle Marion hit a pair of free throws they were within 10 (67-57) at the 5:49 mark but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way.
Yenor paced the Tars with 24 points, as he concluded his sensation Rollins career as the fifth leading scorer of all-time.He also added six rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. Marion added 14 points and five assists, while Latimer scored 14, grabbed five rebounds, and had a pair of steals. Rollins shot 43.6 percent from the field, 28.6 percent (6-21) from the 3-point line, and 81.8 percent (9-11) at the free throw line. The Tars had 15 assists and nine turnovers in the game.
ERAU was led by Malcolm Whitlow with 21, Chris Murray tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Dru Nickson had 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Allesandro rounded out the double digit scorers with 10. ERAU shot 47.8 percent from the floor, 33 percent (9-27) from the 3-point line, and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the free throw line. They dominated the glass 45-25. ERAU had 24 assists and six turnovers in this one.
