Rollins Nips Warner For First Win Of 2023-24 Campaign.
Matheus Silveira scored 19 points, Kyle Marion added 16, and Cody Potter scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Rollins Tars (1-2) were a 67-61 winner over the Warner Royals at Warden Arena on Friday afternoon. Rollins shot 40 percent from the field and 20 percent (5-25) from the 3-point line in the victory. The Tars shot 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line. They had 17 assists and 15 turnovers in the contest.
For the Royals (2-2) who played this game as an exhibition Christian nurse scored 20 and Jamal Norris added 12 in the contest. Warner shot 42 percent from the field and 26 percent (7-27) from the 3-point line in the defeat. They also were just 5-8 (57 percent) from the free throw line. The Royals won the rebounding battle 40-35. They had 15 assists and 22 turnovers in this one.
Rollins jumped out to a 10-4 lead early as Kyle Marion knocked down a jumper just over four minutes in. Warner fought back and knotted the game at 12 on a Norris 3-pointer at the 12:27 mark of the opening half. After Warner held the lead for about a seven minute span Rollins got a spark of the bench from Jack Kronague. The freshman from Cincinnati gave Rollins a 26-23 lead as he had a pair of trips to the free throw line after some solid defense at the 3:26 mark of the opening half. A 3-pointer by Nick Lowery knotted the game at 26 but a Kyle Marion triple put Rollins back up three. The Tats were ultimately take a 34-31 lead into the locker room.
Rollins would stretch the lead to seven (43-36) after a Potter hoop and Marion split a pair of free throws. After a steal and dunk by Juwan Dawes the Rollins lead was trimmed to four (52-48) at the 10:52 mark. Rollins once again stretched the lead to eight (58-50) after a pair of Marion free throws with just over eight minutes on the clock. After a jumper by Kronague and a Silveira hoop the Tars were in control leading by 11 (65-54) with 4:04 to go. A 7-0 run by the Royals would get them within four (65-61) at the 1:01 mark after a Norris 3-ball. The Tars would just do enough to close this one in the final minute.
Rollins will be back in action on Monday when they host Puerto Rico Mayaguez. Tip time for that contest is set for 6 PM at Warden Arena.
