Rollins Outlasted by Spring Hill In Overtime.
The Rollins College Tars had an eight point lead late in regulation but could not hang on as they would ultimately fall 65-63 in overtime at Warden Arena Saturday afternoon. The Badgers improve to 1-1 after losing to Florida Tech on Friday. Rollins falls to 0-1 following the defeat.
The two teams would go back and forth in the early going, after a Cody Potter jumper just under six minutes in the Tars held a 13-12 edge. Trailing 21-16 Rollins would go on a 8-0 run as Sergey Grishaev and Jaden Frazier would provide buckets in the paint gave Rollins the lead. Braxton Barnhizer would hit a shot to cap the 8-0 win and gave Rollins a 24-21 lead with 6:15 to go in the opening half. Luka Erdmann would hit a 3-pointer to give the Badgers the lead and Cade Long would score the last basket before halftime as the Badgers took a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
Potter hit a pair of free throws and Barnhizer knocked down a 3-ball to open the second half scoring. A Potter triple at the 13:49 mark gave the Tars a 40-34 lead. Frazier made a layup with 8:31 to go and it was 46-38 in favor of the home team. Dylan Woods hit a Tars triple with 3:23 to go and the lead was still six (56-50.) The next six points would go to the Badgers as a Walter Peggs jam tied the game with 1:33 in the regulation. Kyle Marion knocked down a triple to give Rollins a 59-56 lead with 16 ticks on the clock. Steven Lyles would tie it with a three of his own with four seconds to go. Marion would have about a 30 footer to win it but it was off the mark and we head to overtime.
Silveira gave Rollins the lead in the first minute of overtime but that was short lived as a Bo Barber 3-pointer gave the Badgers the lead right back. A back cut by Cade Long for a layup put the Tars back in front. Neither teams would score for the next two minutes until Peggs nailed what proved to be the game winning 3-pointer with one minute left in overtime. Rollins had a couple looks from distance later but could not convert. Ultimately the Tars did not score the last 3:27 of overtime.
Potter led the Tars with 11, Barnhizer added 10, while both Grishaev and Long tallied nine. Rollins shot 40.7 percent as a team, 26.3 percent (5-19) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (10-12) at the free throw line. They had 16 assists and 12 turnovers as a team.
The Badgers had four players in double figures paced by Lyles with 20, Peggs added 15, while Barber netted 11, and Timothy Reilly scored 10. Spring Hill shot 37.5 percent from the field, 32.4 percent (12-37) from the 3-point line, and 55.6 percent (5-9) at the free throw line. The Badgers won the rebounding battle 42-35. They had 17 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Lincoln University (PA.) Tip time for that game is set for 7 PM at Warden Arena.
