Four Tars In Double Figures As Tars Drop Fifth Straight.
Four Rollins College players scored in double figures but it was not enough as Rollins fell 81-70 to Montana State Billings at Ocean Center in the second day of the Daytona Beach Shootout. Matheus Silveria had 20, Kyle Marion and Sergey Grishaev each had 15, and Cade Long scored 10 as Rollins fell to 3-7 on the year with a fifth straight defeat. The Yellow jackets improved to 8-4 with the win.
It was 7-0 Yellow Jackets to start this one before a Grishaev jumper at the 17:11 mark got the Tars on the board. Down 13-4 Rollins got a jumper from Silveira and a Cade Long triple to cut the lead to four (13-9) at the 15:12 mark of the first half. The lead would be stretched to double digits as Ky Kouba would hit back to back 3-pointer's to make it 27-16 Billings at the 11:34 mark of the half. Grisahev and Jaden Frazier hit buckets for the Tars and they were within six (34-28) at the 5:21 mark of the first half. The Billings lead was stretched to nine on a Step Richmond jumper with 3:21 until halftime. Two free throws from Silveira and a Marion triple got Rollins within four with 1:18 until halftime. Daniel Moody and Marion traded baskets but a buzzer beating bucket by Jalen Tot put the Yellow Jackets up six at halftime (43-37.)
Billings shot 53.3 percent from the field and went 10-18 from the 3-point line in the opening half. They went 1-2 at the free throw line in the stanza.
Rollins shot 50 percent from the field and 33 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line in the opening half. They were 4-6 at the charity stripe in the opening stanza.
The Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to double digits again (49-39) on a Tot jumper at the 17:10 mark. After the lead again grew to double digits Jack Kronague nailed a triple to pull the Tars within nine (55-46) with 14:42 on the clock. The lead stayed from between 8-11 for much of the next nine plus minutes. Long hit his second 3-ball of the game at the 1:18 mark to pull Rollins within seven. After a Marion 3-ball with 55 ticks remaining Rollins was within four (74-70) but that would be as close as they would get. The Yellow Jackets iced this one at the free throw line.
Rollins shot 44.3 percent, 24.2 percent (8-33) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (8-10) at the free throw line. They had 16 assists and 15 turnovers in the contest.
Billings was paced by Tot who poured in a game high 32 points, Kobe was the only other Billings player in double figures with 11. They shot 49.1 percent from the floor, 45.2 percent (14-31) from the 3-point line, and 72.2 percent (13-18) at the free throw line. They also won the rebounding battle 39-27. They had 23 assists and 17 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action after the holiday break when they take on Saint Leo at Warden Arena on 12/30. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
