Grishaev's Career Day Not Enough As Tars Drop Sixth Straight.
Sergey Grishaev scored a career high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out four assists. He was joined in double figures by Kyle Marion and Matheus Silveira with 12 each in a 77-62 loss to Saint Leo at Warden Arena Saturday. Marion added eight assists.With the loss Rollins drops to 3-8 and 0-4 in the SSC. Saint Leo improves to 7-5 and 2-2 in the SSC. Rollins shot 40.3 percent from the field, went just 3-26 from the 3-point line (11.5 percent,) and 5-9 (55.6 percent) from the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 44-42. They had 18 assists and 11 turnovers.
Saint Leo was led by 25 points from Logan Ryan, Kanon Koster had 21, and Cantia Rahming added 15. The Lions shot 41.2 percent from the field, 40 percent 16-40) from the 3-point line, and 55.6 percent (5-9) from the free throw line. They had 24 assists and just six turnovers as a team.
Both teams came out ice cold to start the game. The first points of the contest came on a Braxton Barnhizer layup at the 17:04 mark of the first half. After a Koster 3-pointer Rollins trailed 8-4 at the 14:30 mark of the opening stanza. Rollins fought back and knotted the game at 10 on a Silveria hoop with 12:45 until halftime. The Lions opened up a five point lead but again the Tars would fight back. Marion hit back to back jumpers to give the home team a 19-18 lead but that would be short lived. A 3-pointer by Grant Disken would give the Lions a 21-19 lead. After Grishaev split a pair of free throws a Marion jumper gave the Tars a 22-21 lead with 5:19 in the half. A free throw by Rahming knotted the game at 22. Marion, Cody Potter, and Jaden Frazier all scored to give the Tars a six point lead (28-22) with 2:47 in the half. Just like the beginning of the game the Tars would go cold to end the half. A jumper by Omar Hot and a 3-pointer by Ryan would make it a 28-27 Rollins lead headed to the locker room.
Saint Leo shot 29.4 percent in the first half, 22.7 percent (5-22) from the 3-point line, and 40 percent (2-5) at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.
Rollins shot 44.8 percent in the opening half, 1-12 (8.3 percent) from the 3-point line, and 33.3 percent (1-3) from the free throw line.
Rollins continued its cold shooting to start the second half and Koster hit three consecutive triples to give the Lions a 36-28 lead with 17:46 to go. Grishaev had a traditional three-point play and a triple that cut the lead to two (36-34.) Ryan and Koster would each hit from long range and Cahning stretched the lead to 10 (44-34.) with a hoop. Marion hit a jumper but again Ryan hit from deep. After a Marion jumper Koster nailed yet another triple to make it 50-38 Lions. After a Cahning layup the lead grew to 15 (57-42) with 12:16 to go. Rollins got to within 12 (67-55) after a layup by Grishaev at the 5:07 mark. The would be as close as the Tars would get the rest of the way.
Rollins will be back in action on 1/3 when they head to Miami Shores to take on Barry. Tip time is slated for 7:30 PM.
