Defending Champs Flex Muscles in Winter Park.
The #3 Nova Southeastern Sharks are the defending Division II national champs and they made short work of the Rollins College Tars on Wednesday night in a 108-64 NSU win. With the win NSU improves to 12-1 and 6-1 in the SSC. Rollins drops to 4-10 and 1-6 in the SSC following the defeat.
NSU scored the games first five points before Matheus Silveira put Rollins on the board. It was 10-2 NSU when Kyle Marion knocked down a triple for the Tars. A 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Rhyker Ciserik made it 17-5 NSU just under six minutes in. A Rollins 3-pointer by Sergey Grishaev made it a nine point game (25-16) with 9:22 in the first half. A 9-0 run capped by an Alex Mangold 3-ball stretched the NSU lead to 37-19 with 6:21 in the half. The lead grew to 22 (41-19) before Rollins ran off the next six points. With 1:45 left in the half the NSU lead was 14 (43-29) after a Silveira hoop. The Sharks closed the half on a 8-2 run to take a 20 point lead (51-31) into halftime.
NSU shot 44.9 percent from the field in the first half. They shot 29.4 percent (5-17) from the 3-point line and 66 percent (2-3) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.
For the Tars they shot 37 percent from the field in the first half. They shot 25 percent (3-12) from the 3-point line and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.
NSU came out firing in the second half and stretched the lead to 30 (63-33) on a Mangold layup with 16:36 to go. The lead would swell to 45 (88-43) after Isaiah Fuller knocked down a triple. The largest lead of the game was 47 and the Sharks cruised to the 108-64 win.
NSU had five players score in double figures in the win. Mangold led the way with 19, Cisarik had 18, Shane Hunter added 14, Fuller tallied 12, and Trey Doomes contributed 10. As a team NSU shot 50 percent from the floor, 32.1 percent (9-28) from the 3-point line, and 73.3 percent (11-15) at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 43-40. The Sharks had 23 assists and eight turnovers in the contest.
Rollins was led by 14 points and nine rebounds by Grishaev. Marion added 13 and Cody Potter netted nine. As a team the Tars shot 35.8 percent from the floor, 26.7 percent (8-30) from the 3-point line, and 81.8 percent (18-22) from the free throw line. They had 11 assists and 31 turnovers in the contest. Those 31 turnovers turned it 42 NSU points.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they host the University of Tampa. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
