Four Tally Double Figures In Tars Win Over UT
Four players scored in double figures as the Rollins College Tars knocked off the University of Tampa Spartans 88-84 at Warden Arena on Saturday. Matheus Silveira paced Rollins with 25, both Kyle Marion and Sergey Grishaev added 16 and Dylan Wolle netted 12 to round out the double digit scorers. With the win Rollins improves to 5-10 and 2-6 in the SSC. Tampa was led by four players in double digits as well. Bryan Williams poured in a game high 27 points, Tyson Leitao added 12, while both Jesse White and Amari Davis tallied 10. With the loss Tampa falls to 5-10 and 1-6 in the SSC.
Rollins would jump out to a 9-3 lead early as Silveria went on a personal 6-0 run. A 3-pointer by Wolle would make it 14-5 Tars at the 16:10 mark of the first half. The next five points went the way of the Spartans. After Grishaev hit a 3-pointer at the 9:55 mark of the first half Rollins regained a double digit lead (26-16.) Cade Long hit a 3-pointer but then the Spartans went on another 5-0 run. After a pair of Braxton Barnhizer free throws Rollins led 39-22 with 4:11 until halftime. After an old fashioned three-point play by Marion stretched the lead to 21 (49-28) with under a minute to go in the half the Spartans would end the half on a 7-0 spurt. Rollins led by 13 early in the second half on a pair of occasions. A Marion triple at the 16:20 mark made it a 16 point (61-45) Rollins lead. After a jumper by Silveria with 9:49 to go the Tars lead was 17 (70-53.) Over the next five minutes Rollins would go ice cold and the Spartans would go on a 13-0 run to get to within four (70-66) after a Williams jumper at the 4:43 mark. The Tars would go back inside to Silveira as he hit a jumper, a dunk and a layup and Grishaev added a hoop to make it 78-66 in favor of the home team with 2:43 on the clock. White hit a triple for Spartans but Grishaev would answer with a hoop of his own. The next six points went the way of UT as the lead was trimmed to five (80-75) with 35 seconds on the clock. Grishaev calmly hit a pair of free throws but a 3-ball by Zach Johnson made it 82-78 with 28 ticks remaining. Wolle and Marion would ice this one at the free throw line for the Tars as they picked up the victory.
Silveria went 12-14 from the floor to get his 25 points to go with eight rebound and five assists. Marion added 16 points and five assists, Grishaev had 16 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks while Wolle was 3-7 from the floor, 2-5 from the 3-point line and a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. Rollins shot 53.4 percent as a team, 41.7 percent (10-24) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line in the contest. The Tars had 22 assists and 14 turnovers in the contest.
For the Spartans Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and five steals. Leitao added 12 points and seven rebounds, while both White and Davis netted 10. As a team UT shot 44.3 percent from the floor, 50 percent (8-16) from the 3-point line, and 63.6 percent (14-22) from the free throw line. The Spartans won the rebounding battle 38-35. They had 14 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach. Tip time is slated for 6 PM.
