Hot Shooting Tars Gain Split With Saint Leo
The Rollins College Tars shot a sizzling 61.7 percent from the field which included making 50 percent (11-22) of the teams shots from long range and going 8-11 (72.7 percent) from the free throw line in a 93-74 win over Saint Leo at the Marion Bowman Activities Center. With the win Rollins improves to 7-14 and 4-10 in the SSC. The Lions fall to 9-13 and 4-10 in the SSC following the defeat.
It was the Lions who jumped out to the early lead before a Sergey Grishaev triple knotted the game at seven with 17:05 in the opening half. Joseph Locandro went on a personal 5-0 run to put the home team on top 12-7. Grisahev would knock down a three and a Cade Long triple gave Rollins a 13-12 lead with 15:25 until halftime. The game would be knotted at 16 before a pair of Matheus Silveira free throws put Rollins on top. Saint Leo tied it at 18 on a Marshawn Robinson layup. Then Kyle Marion would go on a personal 7-0 run as he hit a jumper, a layup and a triple to put the visitors on top 25-18 with 11:53 to go in the first half. Locandro hit a three but that was quickly answered by a Long 3-ball that put the Tars back up seven. Braxton Barnhizer would knock down a three for the Tars and they led by 10 (42-32) with 2:19 until halftime. Rollins would ultimately take a 46-36 lead into the halftime break.
After a Kanon Koster jumper pulled the Lions within single digits Rollins went on a 9-0 run as Long hit back to back triples and Marion hit a three of his own to make it 53-38 at the 18:50 mark. The Rollins lead grew to 19 (59-40) as Silveira hit a pair of free throws and a layup. After a Koster three-point play Rollins went on another run, this time a 8-0 spurt capped by a Long jumper at the 13:33 mark that swelled the Tars lead to 24 (67-43.) A 7-0 run by the Lions made the deficit for the home team 17 (69-52) after two Cantia Rahming free throws at the 10:29 mark. That would be the last threat by the Lions as the Tars would come away with the split of the season series.
Rollins was led by Silveira who had 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocks. Long was 5-10 from long range on his way to 22 points, Marion stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, while Grisahev chipped in 15. As a team Rollins shot 61.7 percent from the floor, 50 percent (11-22) from the 3-point line, and 72.7 percent (8-11) from the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 37-26. They had 28 assists and 12 turnovers in the contest.
Saint Leo was paced by Locandro who had 16, Rahming added 14, and Koster tallied 13. The Lions shot 45.2 percent from the field, 29.6 percent (8-27) from the 3-point line, and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free throw line. They had 13 assists and eight turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they host Eckerd College. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
