Spartans Slip Past Tars

The Tampa Spartans slipped past the Rollins College Tars 79-77 on Saturday at the Martinez Sports Complex. With the win Tampa improves to 8-17 and 4-13 in the SSC. Rollins falls to 8-16 and 5-11 in the SSC following the defeat.

Matheus Silveria led Rollins with 20 points, Kyle Marion netted 19, Dylan Wolle knocked down five triples on his way to 17, and Braxton Barnhizer tallied 10. As a team the Tars shot 46.6 percent from the floor, 44 percent (11-25) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (12-15) from the free throw line.

The Spartans were paced by Jesse White with 23, Bryan Williams had 14, Tyson Leitao added 11, and Drew Knuppel tallied 10. UT shot 40 percent from the field, 32.3 percent (10-31) from the 3-point line, and 65 percent (13-20) from the free throw line.

It was the Spartans that jumped out to a 17-6 lead after a Leitao jumper at the 12:16 mark of the first half. The lead was stretched to 14 before Rollins got to within nine (25-16) on a Wolle triple at the 7:14 mark of the opening half. Down 11 at the 4:06 mark of the first half Rollins went on a 7-0 run to pull within four (34-30) with 2:22 until halftime. A triple by Cade Long and then another 3-ball, this one by Wolle would pull Rollins within two (38-36) at halftime. Rollins shot 39.9 percent in the opening half, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the 3-point line, and 71.4 percent (5-7) at the free throw line in the opening stanza.

For Tampa they shot 35.1 percent from the floor, 29.4 percent (5-17) from the 3-point line, and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the free throw line in the opening stanza.

After Williams hit the first bucket of the second half Rollins knotted the game at 40 on a Silveria layup in the opening minute of the second stanza. The teams went back and forth until Wolle put the Tars up 50-49 with 14:21 to go. White made sure that lead was short-lived as he hit a three of his own. Barnhizer hit a triple and Rollins was down one (58-57) with 10:18 on the clock. After a Williams layup Wolle hit a 3-ball and Marion gave Rollins the lead back 62-60 with 8:56 to go. Once again White had the answer with the triple for the home team. After a brief three point Rollins lead a 6-0 run by the Spartans put them back up three (69-66) after a White three with 6:09 remaining. Marion hit a pair of free throws but the next four points went to UT. A triple by Barnhizer trimmed the Tars deficit to two (73-71) 3:49 to go. Leitao and Silveira would then trade baskets before a pair of Knuppel free throws. Marion would make a layup, the Tars would get a stop and Silveria would score to knot the game at 77 with 29 ticks to play. A layup by Williams with three seconds left would prove to be the game winner for the Spartans.

Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Boca Raton to take on Lynn. Tip time is set for 7:30 PM.
