Balanced Attack Powers Rollins To Wire To Wire Win
The Rollins College Tars saw 11 players see action on Wednesday night at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center, nine of them knocked down a 3-point shot, and The Tars led from wire to wire in a 83-63 win over the Warner Royals. Rollins improves to 2-1 on the season while the Royals played the game as an exhibition so they remain with a 2-2 record.
Sergey Grishaev paced the Tars with game highs in points (21) and rebounds (12,) Emillis Butkus scored in double figures for the third time in three games with 14, Beau Frericks added 12, and Jon Latimer contributed 10. Grishaev also led the team in assists with five on the night. Rollins shot 43.5 percent from the field, 47.8 percent (11-23) from the 3-point line, and 81.8 percent (18-22) at the free throw line. Rollins dominated the boards 43-32, while they had 22 assists, and 11 turnovers on the night. Warner was led by Bryan Castillo and Blaze Darling with 12, while Logan West chipped in 11. Skyler Scull had a team high five assists while West and Jason Ogbolu each had five rebounds. The Royals shot 36.2 percent from the field, 26.9 percent (7-26) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (14-21) at the free throw line. They had 12 assists and 11 turnovers on the night.
Rollins scored the games first six points as Latimer hit a layup, Grishaev made a pair of free throws and Frericks hit a jumper to make the score 6-0 at the 17:22 mark of the opening half. The lead would grow to 13 (18-5) on a Frericks triple at the 13:28 mark of the opening stanza. After Darling knocked down a trey to close the gap to 10 (23-13) Dylan Wolle hit a three and Latimer converted a basket and was fouled. He converted the free throw to make it 29-13 with 9:07 until halftime. Braxton Barnhizer hit a shot from long range to make it 34-17 Rollins with 7:19 in the half. The Tars would go ice cold for the next three plus minutes and the Royals would get to within single digits (34-25) on a West jumper at the 3:54 mark of the half. Rollins would close the half on a 8-0 run punctuated by a William Jobe slam right before halftime.
Rollins shot 40.6 percent in the first half, 58.3 percent (7-12) from the 3-point line, and 81.8 percent (9-11) from the free throw line. On the opposite side Warner shot 32.1 percent from the floor, 16.7 percent (2-12) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (5-6) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.
Warner came out with a purpose in the second half and pulled within single digits again (45-36) on a West dunk with 17:23 to go. Darling hit a pair of free throws to pull them within seven but a triple by Latimer got it back to a 10 point game. The lead would grow to 15 (53-38) with 14:01 to play. Once again the Royals fought back and got to within seven (53-46) on a Scull 3-pointer with 11:15 to go. Butkus would spark a 12-0 run that all but put this one away though. He hit a pair of three pointers, Grishaev and Frericks each hit a pair of free throws and a bucket off of a free throw stretched the lead to 19. The lead would grow to as many as 23 before the Tars picked up the 20 win.
Rollins will be back in action Saturday when they host the University of Fort Lauderdale. Tip time is set for 12 PM.
