Cold Shooting Tars Woes Continue Versus PBA
The Rollins College Tars were hoping a near year would produce different results when it came to playing the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. In what was the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams Rollins fell the sixth time in a row and ninth time in the last 10 meetings against Palm Beach Atlantic by a score of 86-66 at Warden Arena. The loss was also the third straight for the Tars by double digits to PBA.
Rollins (3-2 0-1 SSC) shot just 35.8 percent from the field and 20 percent (5-25) from the 3-point line in the loss. They did shoot 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line. Sergey Grishaev led the Tars with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Beau Frericks scored 14 and dished out five assists while notched 12 to go along with seven rebounds.
Palm Beach Atlantic (4-0 1-0 SSC) was led by five players in double figures. Will Lee knocked down four triples on his way to 18 points, Josh Ward added 13, Graham Worland notched 12, and both Jamaal Walker and Broderick Ellis scored 10 each in the win for PBA.
Rollins started the game off with a 3-pointer from Butkus on the opening possession. After a free throw by Walker cut it to two Grishav gave the Tars a 5-1 lead with a jumper at the 18:19 mark of the first half. Rollins had the lead until the Sailfish took a 10-9 lead on a Jakob Hester layup at the 15:08 mark made it 10-9 PBA. That would be a lead that the Saifish would not relinquish the rest of the way. At the 12:14 mark of the opening stanza after a Grishaev jumper Rollins trailed 16-15. Tyler Burton and Butkus would then trade triples to keep it a one point game. The Sailfish would grow the lead to seven (27-20) when Hester hit a pair of free throws. Rollins would trail by five (29-24) after Ian Hart scored at the 4:43 mark of the first half. A triple by Jon Latimer at the 1:13 mark would see the Tars trail 38-31. The Sailfish would end the half on a 5-0 run as the Tars would trail 43-31 headed into the locker room. Rollins shot 37.1 percent in the opening stanza, 21.4 percent (3-14) from the 3-point line, and went a perfect 2-2 at the free throw line. For PBA, they shot 37.9 percent in the first 20 minutes, 30.8 percent (4-13) from the 3-point line and 89.5 percent (17-19) at the free throw line in the half.
Rollins fell down by 19 (52-33) early in the second half after a Will Lee triple. The Tars would score the next six points, four by Frericks and a dunk by Grishaev cut the lead to 13 (52-39) with 15:25 to go. PBA would have an answer and the lead would grow back to 18. It was a 61-45 deficit when Grishav hit a pair of free throws, Michael Kalina made a layup off of a steal by Jon Latimer, and then a Ian Hart steal led to a Grishaev dunk that made it 61-51 at the 10:36 mark. PBA would then go on a 15-2 run that would seal this one in the conference opener for both teams.
PBA shot 49.2 percent as a team, 34.5 percent (10-29) from the 3-point line, and 81.8 percent (18-22) at the free throw line. They were +10 (36-26) on points in the paint. They also had a 22-9 edge in fast break points, as well as 27-11 advantage in bench points. PBA had 16 assists and 16 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins won the rebounding battle 39-35. They had 12 assists and 15 turnovers in the contest. The Tars will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome Nova Southeastern to Winter Park. Tip time is set for 4 PM.
