Offense Powers Tars To Season Opening Win

You knew going into Friday's season opener of the SSC/SIAC Crossover at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center things were going to be a little different. For the first time in 40+years Tom Klusman was not on the sidelines as his back wouldn't allow that. He would have been proud of the effort his team gave and the offense was the key in a 107-98 win over Spring Hill College.

The Tars scored the most points they have since the 2022 season. They were paced by four players who led the way in scoring. Beau Frericks scored 28 points and dished out 10 assists, Sergey Grisahev poured in 23, Emilis Butkus knocked down six triples on his way to 22, and Jon Latimer netted 18. The Tars shot 57.1 percent from the field, 55.6 percent (15-27) from the 3-point line, and 87 percent (20-23) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 34-33. They had 20 assists and 10 turnovers in the contest.

The Badgers were led by Steven Lyles with 27, Walter Peggs added 25, and Rocco Lamuno scored 23. Spring Hill shot 47.2 percent from the field, 41.9 percent (18-43) from the 3-point line, and 85.7 percent (12-14) at the free throw line.

Rollins came out hot with a pair of threes to open the game but it was quickly knotted at 11. Rollins used a 10-0 run to go up 23-16 on a pair of Frericks free throws. A 13-0 run by SHC gave them a 27-23 lead on a Jayden Webley jumper halfway through the opening half. The Tars would go on a run of their own and take a 36-31 lead after a Latimer 3-ball with 6:32 to go in the half. Rollins would take a 51-45 lead into halftime. Rollins shot 51.5 percent in the first half, 50 percent (7-14) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (10-12) at the free throw line.

For the Badgers they shot 44.4 percent in the first half, 38.1 percent (8-21) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (5-6) at the free throw line.

Rollins stretched the lead to 10 on a three pointer at the 17:51 mark. The teams then traded five point runs. A 9-0 run capped by a Peggs triple pulled the Badgers within one (65-64) with 14:33 to go. Rollins hit three consecutive triples as Dylan Wolle gave them a 74-66 lead with 12:06 on the clock. It was still a seven point game (87-80) after a pair of Peggs free throws with 6:41 to go. Rollins would grow the lead to as many as 18 before a late run by the Badgers. The Tars would avenge the overtime loss against the Badgers from last season.

Rollins will be back in action Saturday (11/9) when they battle Edward Waters University. They were a 73-65 winner over Florida Tech Friday. You can catch all the action on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and worldwide at SunshineStateConference.TV
