Rollins Rallies From Down 20 But Falls In Overtime
The Rollins College Tars dug themselves a 20 point early in the first half, rallied all the way back to force overtime but could not finish the job in a 80-75 loss in day two of the SSC/SIAC crossover at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Rollins falls to 1-1 with the loss as the Tigers improve to 2-0 after the overtime win.
Emilis Butkus paced the Tars with 22 points, while both Jon Latimer and Beau Frericks each tallied 19. Rollin shot 37.9 percent as a team, 35.5 percent (11-31) from the 3-point line, and 87.5 percent (14-16) at the free throw line. The Tars had 17 assists and 13 turnovers in the game.
The Tigers saw Prince Davies score a team high 18 points, Ja'Kobe Williams and Joe Womack each had 11, while Jeremiah Kwarteng netted 10. EWU shot 40.6 percent from the field, 36 percent (9-25) from the 3-point line, and 83.3 percent (15-18) at the free throw line. They had 17 assists and 12 turnovers on the night. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 45-41.
Frericks hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession for the Tars before the next four points went the way of the Tigers. After the game was knotted at eight EWU went on a 21-2 run to open up a 19 point lead with just under 12 minutes to go in the opening frame. A Davies 3-pointer at the 11:16 mark put the Tars in a 20 point hole (32-12.) Rollins would cut into the lead before the Tigers got the lead back out to 15. At the half it was 48-37 in favor of EWU.
Rollins came out hot to start the second half and the defensive intensity picked up as interim head coach Kevin Hogan mixed in some zone with the man to man defense. At the 14:32 mark a Frericks layup knotted the game at 50. The game would go back and forth for much of the rest of regulation. Two free throws by Latimer cut the lead to one (67-66.) After Davies hit a three Rollins got two more free throws from Latimer and a layup with the left-hand by Butkus that tied the game at 70 with 1:09 in regulation. Both teams would have chances late in regulation but neither would score as we headed to overtime.
The cold shooting continued into the extra session as neither team scored in the first two minutes. A Davies 3-pointer at the 2:55 mark put EWU on top. With 2:21 left in overtime and the shot clock winding down Latimer banked a triple off the glass. A Trevino Glover three with 40 seconds would end up being the game winner as the Tigers would pick up the 80-75 win.
In the other game on Saturday Spring Hill won 89-86 in overtime.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they host Warner University. Tip time for that one is set for 7 PM.
