Rollins Routs Bayamon
That is the kind of game the Rollins College Tars needed. The Tars led for nearly the entire contest and routed the Vaqueros of Puerto Rico Bayamnon 83-55 at Warden Arena on Wednesday. Rollins improves to 4-3 with the win while Bayamon falls to 0-5 with the loss.
John Latimer paced the Tars with 19 points, six assists, and four steals. Sergey Grishav added 17 points and Ian Hart tallied 15 points to go along with six boards. Rollins shot 57.9 percent from the field, 28.6 percent (6-21) from the 3-point line and 68.8 percent (11-16) at the free throw line.
Bayamon was led by Bryant Rodriguez who had 12 points and six rebounds, Jeremy Matos added 11, and Victor Carillo was held to just 10 points on 4-14 shooting from the field after his 41 point outburst at Eckerd last time out. The Vaqueros shot 34.4 percent from the field, 21.4 percent (6-28) from the 3-point line, and 70 percent (7-10) at the free throw line.
Carillo opened the scoring and Rodriguez made it 3-0 Vaqueros but the Tars got a jam from Grishaev and then after a steal by Matus Malovec Beau Frericks gave Rollins a lead that they would have the rest of the way. The Tars lead grew to 15-7 on a Hart jumper at the 14:54 mark of the opening half. After Grishaev knocked down a three and Hart split a pair of free throws the Tars lead was 10 (19-9) with 13:51 until halftime. A 7-0 run by the Vaqueros capped by a pair of Joel Negron free throws cut the Tars lead to 19-16. Rollins answered with a 12-0 run of their own to stretch the lead to 15 (31-16.) Rollins had a 15 point lead a couple times but would take a 13 point lead (40-27) into the locker room after a steal by Grishaev and a Latimer layup. Rollins shot 57.7 percent in the opening half, 36.4 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (6-8) from the free throw line. For Bayamon they shot 34.5 percent in the first half, 21.4 percent (3-14) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the free throw line.
Rollins scored the first four points of the second half as Frericks had a layup and Hart made a jumper off a second chance from Grishaev that stretched the lead to 17 (44-27.) Darius Hernandez made a layup at the 16:51 mark off a steal by Evan Colon to make it a 48-32 Rollins lead. The Tars clamped down on the defensive end as Bayamon would not score for more than three minutes. After a Hart layup at the 13:09 mark the Tars had stretched the lead to 24 (58-34.) The lead ballooned to 33 on a Dylan Wolle hoop at the 8:52 mark. That would be the largest lead of the game as Rollins cruised to the 83-55 win. Bayamon had six assists and 16 turnovers in the contest. Rollins had 23 assists to go along with 18 turnovers in the game.
Rollins will be back in action on 12/3 when they host Beacon College. Tip time is slated for 7:30 PM.
