Rollins Shows They Can Hang With The Big Boys In Loss To #1 NSU

The result of Saturday's matchup between #1 Nova Southeastern and the Rollins College Tars at Warden Arena on Saturday does not tell the full story. Rollins proved that they can hang with the best teams in the country if they play like they did, especially offensively in this one. Interim head coach Kevin Hogan had the Tars ready to play, they trailed by three at the half before ultimately falling 109-94 to the top ranked Sharks. The game featured seven ties and nine lead changes.

Rollins (3-3 0-2 SSC) had five players score in double figures in the contest. Emillis Butkus paced Rollins with 23 points, Sergey Grishaev added 22, Beau Frericks scored 15, Ian Hart netted 14 to go with a team leading eight rebounds, and John Latimer tallied 11.

Ross Reeves led NSU (7-0 1-0 SSC) with 29 points, MJ Iraldi scored 23, Tyler Eberhart netted 16, Dallas Graziani notched 14 to go along with 10 assists, and Ryker Cisarik tallied 12.

Butkus came out by scoring the first four points of the contest for the Tars. The next four were scored by the Sharks before a Hart 3-pointer and a Frericks jumper gave Rollins a 9-4 lead. After a steal and layup by Michael Kalina the Tars lead was eight (14-6) at the 15:58 mark of the opening half. The lead grew to 14 (22-8) as Grishaev and Hart each buried a triple. A 9-0 run by NSU cut the lead to 22-17 s Eli Allen hit a three with 10:15 until halftime. After two Kalina free throws at the 7:50 mark of the first stanza Rollins led by seven (28-21.) NSU would score the next eight points to regain the lead 29-28 on a Reeves layup at the 5:58 mark of the first half. Two free throws by Hart briefly gave the Tars the lead back. The next six points went to NSU before a Frericks triple and a Latimer hoop knotted the game at 35 with 4:38 until halftime. The two teams traded four point runs after that. After a NSU free throw Rollins got the lead back on a Grishaev hoop and a Butkus layup. NSU would tie the game on a triple by Cisarik. The see-saw would continue and the game would be knotted at 47 with 2:11 until halftime. The next five points went to NSU but the Tars would answer as Butkus knocked down a 3-ball and then Frericks hit one from long range to give Rollins a 53-52 lead at the 32 second mark until the half. NSU would score the last four points of the half and take a four point lead into the locker room. Rollins shoot 63 percent from the field in the first half and 55 percent (6-11) from the 3-point line. They also shot 82 percent (9-11) at the free throw line in the half. NSU shot 51.6 percent in the first half, 27.3 percent (3-11) from the 3-point line, and 84 percent (21-25) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes.

Rollins scored the first four points of the second half as Butkus put them back on top (57-56) on a layup at the 18:13 mark. It would be 65-61 NSU after Kalina hit two free throws for the Tars at the 15:13 mark. Rollins was within four (67-63) after a Butkus layup. A 8-0 run by the Sharks gave them a 12 point lead. That lead would grow to 17 (84-67) on two free throws by Reeves with 10:50 to go. Rollins would get the lead down to 11 (93-82) after a Grishaev three with 4:36 to go. That is as close as the Tars would get as NSU would walk out of Warden Arena with a 15 point win.

Rollins shot 54 percent in the game, 41.7 percent (10-24) from the 3-point line, and 90 percent (18-20) at the free throw line. The Tars had 20 assists and 19 turnovers in the contest.

NSU shot 53.1 percent from the field, 36 percent (9-25) from the 3-point line, and 82.1 percent (32-39) from the free throw line. The Sharks won the rebounding battle 31-30. They had 19 assists and eight turnovers in the contest. That lead to a 31-16 edge in points off turnovers.

Rollins will be back in action on Wednesday at 2 PM when they host Puerto Rico Bayamon.
