Tars Open Conference Play At Home Against PBA

 The Rollins College Tars (3-1) open Sunshine State Conference (SSC) play when they take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (3-0-) today (11/19) at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. Tip time is slated for 7 PM, as Robert Segal (play by play) and Jim "Shooter" Ferro (color commentator) will be on the call on 91.5 FM WPRK Winter Park and on the Sunshine State Conference Digital Network at SunshineStateConference.TV 

 The Tars were picked seventh in the SSC while PBA is pegged fourth in the preseason. Rollins is sixth in the SSC putting up 85 points per game while they also sit sixth on the defensive end giving up 78.3 points per night. Rollins is shooting an SSC fourth best 46.8 percent from the field while the opposition shoots 41.8 percent from the field which puts them fourth at that end of the floor. The Tars are knocking down an SSC second best 45 percent of their shots from the 3-point line as they are third in the conference making 11.3 triples per contest. They have not been as solid guarding the 3-point line as they are seventh in the SSC allowing the opposition to shoot 36.1 percent from 3-point land. The Tars are third in the SSC shooting at an 83 percent clip from the free throw line, while they are seventh in rebounding margin at +3.2 (38.5-35.3.) Rollins is 10th in turnover margin (2.0) but sixth in assist to turnover ratio (1.43.) Rollins was a 75-72 winner over Fort Lauderdale last time out. Beau Frericks led five players in double figures with 24 points to go along with a team leading six assists, Emillis Butkus added 15, Ian Hart had 13 to go along with eight rebounds, while Dylan Wolle and Sergey Grishaev each had 10 with Grishaev also grabbing eight rebounds. Frericks leads the team and is sixth in the conference pouring in 20.8 points per game, the former Lewis product is also fifth in field goal percentage (55.6 percent,) 10th in the SSC in free throw percentage (90 percent,) leads the team and is fourth in the conference in assists (5.8 per game) and ninth in minutes played (33.5) per game. Butkus is putting up 18.3 points per game, is eighth in field goal percentage in the conference (54.5 percent,) and seventh in the SSC in 3-point percentage (52 percent.) Jon Latimer scores 15.7 points per game while Sergey Grishaev puts up 15.3 per contest. Grishaev leads the team and is tied for ninth in the conference grabbing 8.3 rebounds per contest while the St.Petersburg,Russia native is eighth in the SSC and leads the team blocking 1.8 shots per game. 

The Sailfish are coming off a 80-71 win over Florida National on Saturday. Joshua Ward had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead PBA. He was one of six Sailfish in double figures. He was joined by Jamaal Walker (14,) Alvin Tumblin (12,) Tyler Burton (11,) while both Jakob Hester and Jose Roberto Tanchyn had 10. PBA is eighth in the conference in scoring at 78 points per game while on defense they are holding the opposition to an SSC second best 67.3 points per night. PBA shoots 45.5 percent from the field which is fifth in the SSC while they lead the conference in opponent field goal percentage (38.5 percent.) The Sailfish shoot an SSC eighth best 29.9 percent from the 3-point line, at the other end they hold the opposition to an SSC fourth best 31.1 percent from long range. PBA shoots an SSC sixth best 76.2 percent at the free throw line while on the boards they lead the conference getting 13.3 (43.3-30) more rebounds than the opposition. They are eighth in turnover margin (-1.33) and seventh in assist to turnover ratio (-1.2.) Ward leads four players in double figures at 17 points per game. He is joined in double figures by Tumblin (11.7 per night,) Will Lee (10.7 points  per contest) and Walker (10 points per night.) Hester leads the team in assists at 4.3 per game which is 10th in the conference, Tumblin leads the team on the glass at 7.7 per night, while Ward is one of a slew of players in the conference averaging two steals per night (tied for sixth in the SSC.) 

 The Sailfish swept the season series last year. They won 85-70 at Rubin Arena in December while they were a 95-77 winner in Winter Park in early February. The Tars have lost five straight to Palm Beach Atlantic. The last win over PBA for the Tars was an 88-65 win on 1/22/22.
