Frericks Triple Powers Rollins To Sweep In Puerto Rico.
Beau Frericks drilled a triple at the buzzer, one of his seven 3-point baskets on the day as the Rollins College Tars completed a sweep in Puerto Rico on two fronts. The first sweep was of the Puerto Rican trip this weekend and the second sweep was a season sweep of Puerto Rico Bayamon, as the Frericks triple gave the Tars a 80-77 win on Sunday in a game that featured 17 ties and 21 lead changes. With the win Rollins improves to 7-5 on the year. Bayamon falls to 0-8 following the defeat.
The two teams would go back and forth in the early stages as the contest would be knotted at 14 after a pair of Sergey Grishaev free throws at the 13:59 mark of the opening half. Bayamon would open up a seven point lead (26-19) after Evan Colon converted a layup at the 9:18 mark of the opening stanza. Rollins would fight back as a pair of triples by Frericks would give Rollins a 32-31 edge with 5:10 remaining until halftime. Bayamon would regain the lead 37-36 on a pair of free throws by Victor Carillo but that lead would be short-lived as an Emillis Butkus trey put Rollins back on top. After another lead change Rollins would get a pair of Grishaev free throws right before halftime to take a 41-40 halftime lead. Rollins shot 35.17 percent in the first 20 minutes, 38.89 percent (7-18) from the 3-point line, and 88.89 percent (8-9) at the free throw line. The two teams remained on the see-saw as the game would be tied at 77 after a jumper by Latimer with 1:16 to go. Rollins would get a huge block and rebound by Butkus on the ensuing possession but the Tars would turn the ball over on a player control foul. Carillo would have a chance to give Bayamon the lead with 27 ticks on the clock but his 3-pointer was off the mark. Butkus would grab the rebound and Frericks missed a jumper with six seconds to go.
