Tars Edged By Saints At Home
For much of the 2024-25 Rollins College Men's basketball season 3-point shooting has been a strength. The Tars came into Tuesday's contest in the top three in the SSC from long range. Tuesday was a different story as the Flagler Saints held Rollins to 19 percent shooting (4-19) from distance while the Saints shot 44.8 percent (13-29) from the 3-point line. That would be a large factor as Flagler came away with the 85-79 win at Warden Arena. With the loss Rollins drops to 5-5 on the season. Flagler improved to 6-2 after the win.
John Latimer scored the first four points for the Tars before Flagler got the lead back. A bucket by Latimer made it 6-5 Rollins in the early going. Rollins led by four before the Saints would score eight straight points. The teams would trade the lead a few times before Rollins went back on top 26-25 on a Emilis Butkus jumper at the 10:03 mark of the opening half. After Michal Kalina stole the ball Ian Hart scored at the other end in transition to put the Tars back up three. Destin Clark hit a jumper for Flagler to knot the game at 33 but Sergey Grishaev scored the next four points of the contest for Rollins. The teams would go back and forth late in the first half but it would be a 3-pointer by Jax Bouknight that would give the visitors a 47-44 lead at the intermission. Rollins shot 51.4 percent in the opening half, 16.7 percent (2-12) from the 3-point line and a perfect six of six at the free throw line. Flagler shot 54.3 percent in the first 20 minutes, 50 percent (9-18) from the 3-point line, and did not attempt a free throw in the opening stanza.
Rollins came back and retook the lead 52-51 on a Latimer layup with 17:23 remaining. The teams went back and forth until Flagler went on a 12-0 run capped by a Jaylon Jordon jumper that made it 68-58 Saints at the 9:44 mark. The lead grew to 11 but the Tars would not go quietly. A jumper and steal by Butkus that led to a Latimer jam followed by a Latimer layup had Rollins within five (72-67) with seven minutes to play. The next seven points went Flagler's way to go back up 12. Rollins would make one last push as they got within four on a pair of occasions but ultimately would fall short. Rollins was led by 22 points and nine rebounds from Grishaev, Beau Frericks added 17 points and five assists, Butkus notched 15, and Latimer chipped in 14. Latimer and Frericks each added three steals. Rollins shot 45.3 percent from the field, 19 percent (4-21) from the 3-point line, and 85 percent (17-20) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 34-31. The Tars had 17 assists and 10 turnovers in the contest. Flagler was led by Josiah Shackelford with 26, Bouknight stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds, wile Jordon netted 18. The Saints shot 54.1 percent from the field, 44.8 percent (13-29) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (6-8) at the free throw line. They dished out 22 assists and had 13 turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action this weekend when they travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Rollins will take on Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras at 8 PM on Friday and then Puerto Rico Bayamon on Sunday.
