Tars Start Puerto Rico Trip On A Positive Note

 The Rollins College Tars opened played in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Friday night. Rollins got off to a slow start but the offense clicked in the second half in a 83-63 win against Puerto Rico Rio Piedras. With the win Rollins improves to 6-5 and 0-3 in the SSC. The Gallitos fell to 0-5 after the loss on Friday night. 

 Both teams got off to a slow start on the offensive end as Rollins led 4-0 after a Segey Grishav layup at the 17:21 of the opening half. Alex River hit a triple for the Gallitos and then Rollins retook the lead on a John Latimer basket with 14:18 in the opening half. The Tars lead grew to 11 (19-8) on a Dylan Wolle trey with 11:04 until halftime. The lead remained in double digits as Beau Frericks converted on a layup with 4:03 until halftime that made it 28-17. Ian Hart hit a pair of free throws and the two teams traded triples before halftime to make it a 10 point (33-23) lead for the Tars at halftime. Rollins shot 42.3 percent in the first half, 50 percent (3-6) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes. The Gallitos shot 20 percent from the field, 25 percent (5-25) from the 3-point line, and 60 percent (9-15) from the free throw line in the opening half. 

 The Rollins lead was trimmed to seven (36-29) on an Eric Velasquez basket with 18:18 to go. After a Frericks triple at the 12:15 mark Rollins had a 48-35 lead. The lead grew to 19 (62-43) on a Grishaev layup with 7:49 on the clock. The lead would be as many as 25 as the Tars cruised to an opening win on there trip to San Juan. Rollins had five players score in double figures as Emillis Butkus led the way with 16, Grishaev had 14, Frericks added 13, while both Dylan Wolle and William Jobe added 12. Rollins shot 55.2 percent from the field, 43.8 percent (7-16) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the free throw line. Rollins dominated the glass 35-22. They had 24 assists and 12 turnovers in the contest. The Gallitos were led by Gabriel Davila with 13, while Velazquez and Rivera each tallied 11. UPRP shot 36 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (8-24) from the 3-poiint line, and 70.4 percent (19-27) at the free throw line. They had 10 assists and 14 turnovers as a team. 

 Rollins will be back in action Sunday when they continue the trip to San Juan to take on Puerto Rico Bayamon. Tip time is TBD.
