Defense Tightens Up Late As Rollins Rallies To Outlast ERAU in Overtime

The Rollins College Tars trailed 67-57 with 7:11 left in regulation at Warden Arena. The Tars would not give up another field goal for the remainder of regulation and would rally to force overtime. In overtime the Tars would outscore Embry-Riddle 16-10 to grab the 87-81 win. Beau Frericks paced the Tars with 26 points, John Latimer added 20 and Emillis Butkus scored 19 in the win. That win improved Rollins to 11-7 and 4-5 in the SSC. Jerry Bracey led Embry-Riddle with 16 points and Hussein Yassin tallied 14 in the loss. With the loss the Eagles fell to 11-6 and 5-4 in the SSC.

Rollins got in the paint and to the free throw line to start this one. After a pair of Ian Hart free throws at the 13:17 mark they led 12-9. Clarens Pierre made a layup for the Eagles to cap a 11-2 run to give ERAU a 20-14 lead with 10:29 until halftime. Dawson Barr knocked down a triple and Rollins was down 11 (27-16) with 7:20 in the opening half. The lead stayed in double digits for much of the rest of the half until Rollins closed the half with a 6-0 run as Sergey Grishaev converted a three-point play and a triple by Butkus got Rollins within nine (43-34) as each team headed to the locker room.  Rollins shot 45.8 percent in the opening 20 minutes, 14.3 percent (1-7) from the 3-point line and 78.6 percent (11-14) at the free throw line. ERAU shot 47 percent from the field, 40 percent from three (6-15) and a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line in the opening half.

Dru Nickson scored the first basket of the second half for ERAU before Rollins ran off six straight points. After a Latimer layup at the 14:46 mark Rollins trailed by four (48-44.) The lead stayed within a six point window until Rollins made another mini run. Frericks hit a pair of free throws and Latimer made a jumper to pull the Tars within two (59-57) at the 9:27 mark. A 8-0 run by ERAU looked to have them in control, as it was a 10 point (67-57) lead for the Eagles with 7:11 on the clock. Rollins defense then tightened. Two free throws by Grishaev and a Latimer three cut it to a 67-62 Rollins deficit. Jack Singer split a pair of free throws for ERAU, Frericks made a layup and Butkus hit a pair of free throws to again pull Rollins within two (68-66) with 4:50 in regulation. Two free throws by the Eagles stretched the lead back to four. Butkus made a layup but again the Eagles would split a pair of free throws. A triple by Frericks at the 1:04 mark would knot the game at 71. Each team had a shot to win late but neither would score and we headed into overtime. A three-point play by Pierre put ERAU up three but the answer came on a triple by Mateus Malovec. Michal Kalina gave Rollins a one point lead after a free throw but a 3-pointer by Milan Skoric made it 77-75 ERAU with 3:36 left in the extra session. A three-point play by Frericks gave Rollins a one point lead but that was short-lived as Logan Lewis put ERAU back on top at the 1:59 mark of overtime. Again Frericks got in the lane and finished with contact, his free throw put the Tars up 81-79 with 1:41 to go in the extra session. Michael Kalina would trade baskets with Berry from the Eagles to make it 83-81 Rollins with 47 seconds left in overtime. Butkus split. a pair of free throws but once again as had been the case much of the day the Tars got a stop when they needed one. The Tars would then ice the game with three free throws as they came away with the 87-81 win. The Tars shot 47.4 percent from the field, 25 percent (5-20) from the 3-point line and 80 percent (28-35) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 41-40. They had 17 assists and 13 turnovers in the contest. For ERAU they shot 38.2 percent from the field, 32.1 percent (9-28) from the 3-point line, and 74 percent (20-27) at the free throw line. They had 15 assists and 10 turnovers in this one.
