Four Tars Score Double Figures In Loss At Tampa.

Winning on the road is hard enough in the Sunshine State Conference. When you turn the ball over and get killed on the offensive glass it is nearly impossible. That was the case on Saturday as Rollins lost 99-92 at the Bob Martinez Center at the University of Tampa.  Rollins turned the ball over 18 times and gave up 23 offensive rebounds in the defeat. Emillis Butkus scored a career high for the second straight game with 26, Beau Frericks had 21, Sergey Grishaev added 16, John Latimer added 13 points, seven rebounds and dished out seven assists. With the loss Rollins drops to 8-6 and 1-4 in the SSC. Tampa improves to 10-3 and 2-3 in the SSC after the win.

Offensive rebounds were the story early as Tampa had three of them in the first 1:10. It was 5-0 UT two minutes in. Butkus and Frericks each nailed a three for the Tars to take a 8-5 lead at the 16:31 mark of the opening half. After a Ryan Blount triple at the 13:28 mark of the half it was 15-10 in favor of the home team. Ian Higdon scored on another offensive board for the Spartans as they had their largest lead of the game (19-12) with 11:34 left in the half. Rollins would battle back and a Dylan Wolle layup at the 6:23 mark tied the game at 23 with 6:15 in the half. The remainder of the first half went back and forth. Latimer scored right before halftime to give the Tars a 41-40 halftime lead. Rollins shot 55.2 percent in the opening half, 41.7 percent (5-12) from the 3-point line, and a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. UT shot 45.7 percent in the opening half, 37.5 percent (6-16) from the 3-point line, and 2-2 at the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.

Mateus Malovec hit a triple for the Tars to tie the game at 45 with 18:14 to go. After a Grishaev triple the game was tied again, this time at 51. A Trey Lane three would give Tampa a 64-58 lead that would be answered by a William Jobe triple with 11:48 on the clock. Rollins would get to within two but could not get over the hump. UT would stretch the lead to double digits at 74-64 with just under eight minutes to go. With 3:56 to go Blount hit a 3-pointer for Tampa that gave them a 14 point lead (87-73.) Down 13 (91-78) with 1:11 to go the Tars would not quit. A 7-0 run capped by an old fashioned three point play by Butkus would make it 91-85 with 55 ticks on the clock. Rollins would get to within four once more (94-90) as Butkus again scored and was fouled. He converted the free throw with 26 seconds to go. That is as close as the Tars would get as they saw a three game win streak end. For the game Rollins shot 52.5 percent from the field, 40.7 percent (11-27) from the 3-point line, and 82.6 percent (19-23) at the free throw line. The Tars had 18 assists and 18 turnovers in this one. For Tampa Amarion Nimmers paced the squad with 32 points,  Trey Lane notched 22 points and 10 rebounds, Blount added 12, and Tyson Leitao scored 11 to go with nine boards. Tampa shot 50.8 percent from the floor, 40.7 percent (11-27) from the 3-point line, and 78.6 percent (22-28) from the free throw line. The Spartans dominated the rebounding battle 40-24. They had 14 assists and 18 turnovers in the contest.
