Latimer Layup At The Buzzer Lifts Rollins To Home Win.

John Latimer made a layup at the buzzer to lift the Rollins College Tars to a thrilling 72-70 win over the Saint Leo Lions at Warden Arena on Wednesday night. Rollins improves to 9-6 and 2-4 in the SSC after the thriller. Saint Leo falls to 7-8 and 2-5 in the SSC after the crushing defeat.

Defense dominated the early stages of this one as Rollins held Saint Leo scoreless for the games first 5:50 but they only led 6-3 as a 3-pointer by the Lions Brady Corso cut the lead in half at the 14:10 mark of the first half. The game was closely played for the next five minutes and a triple by Emillis Butkus at the 9:50 mark of the first half gave Rollins a 18-14 lead. The final 10 minutes of the first half saw neither team have bigger than a six point lead. It would be 36-33 in favor of the Tars at halftime. Rollins shot 48.4 percent in the opening half, 35.7 percent (5-14) from the 3-point line and made the only free throw they attempted in the opening half. For Saint Leo they shot 46.3 percent from the field, 36.4 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line, and 50 percent (3-6) from the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes. Rollins went on a 8-0 run to start the second half as  Sergey Grishaev and Latimer made layups to give Rollins a 45-33 lead. After Latimer scored at the 12:47 mark Rollins had a 13 point lead (54-41.) Mateus Malovec made two free throws at the 10:22 mark to give Rollins their largest lead of the game at 15 (58-43.) The lead was 13 (64-51) when Saint Leo answered with a pair of triples. The first by Amar Hot and then another by Corso. Another basket, this one by Trey Murray trimmed the Rollins lead to five (64-59) with 6:52 on the clock. Latimer would score the next three points for Rollins but a Tae Wilson dunk at the 4:51 mark would cut the lead to three (67-64) with 4:51 to go. A Latimer triple looked to put Rollins in control with a 70-64 lead at the 3:45 mark. Rollins would then go cold for the next three minutes and a 6-0 run by the Lions capped by a tip in by Jalyn McElroy knotted the game at 70 with just under a minute to go. Each team failed to score on their next possessions and then Rollins got another stop with two seconds to go. Latimer would go coast to coast to beat the buzzer and pick up another Rollins win. Latimer paced the Tars with 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists,  Grishaev also came up big at both ends as he tallied 17 points, dishes out five assists, and swatted seven shots. Butkus rounded out the double digit scorers with 12. Rollins shot 46 percent from the field, 32 percent (8-25) from the 3-point line, and 50 percent (6-12) from the free throw line. Each team secured 38 rebounds. The Tars had 15 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest. Corso led the Lions with 22, McElroy had 13, Wilson notched 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Hot had 10.
