Rollins Trio Combines For 57 Points in Road Win
The Rollins College Tars traveled to Saint Pete College Griggs Campus Gym on Wednesday night for a SSC battle. The Tars got 57 points from the trio of Emillis Butkus, Beau Frericks, and Sergey Grishaev as they came away with a 78-67 win. With the win Rollins improves to 10-7 and 3-5 in the SSC. The Tars eclipsed the nine wins that they posted last season on Wednesday. Eckerd falls to 8-9 and 3-6 in the SSC despite 28 points from Isaiah Placide and 18 from Koa Baker.
Eckerd held the lead early until Butkus knocked down a 3-ball to give Rollins a 7-5 lead at the 16:55 mark of the first half. A Mateus Malovec triple extended the Rollins lead to five. After an Ian Hart layup in the paint just over eight minutes in Rollins had a 22-14 edge with 11:41 until halftime. Eckerd would battle back as Placide would hit a pair of triples and the game would be tied at 27 with 8:24 left in the half. A third straight trey by Placide would give the Tritons a three point lead before a dunk by William Jobe got Rollins within one. After a Butkus basket at the 3:49 mark of the half we would again be knotted, this time at 33. After the Tars scored the last four points of the first half, a Grishaev layup off of a Frericks assist and then a Frericks layup the Tars took a three point(41-38) halftime lead. Rollins shot 54.8 percent from the field in the first half and 50 percent (5-10) from the 3-point line, they also shot 50 percent (2-4) at the free throw line. The Tritons shot 40.7 percent in the first half, 38.9 percent (7-18) from the 3-point line, and 90 percent (9-10) from the free throw line in the opening stanza. Eckerd tied the game on a pair of occasions early in the second half. A three and another bucket by Butkus along with a pair of Grishaev free throws gave the Tars a 50-46 lead with 14:42 to go. Placide hit another triple to get the Tritons to within one but Rollins then went on a 9-0 run as a Hart jumper and a Frericks layup gave them a 10 point lead (59-49) at the 11:53 mark. The Tars would go up by as many as 15 (70-55) after a Butkus layup. Eckerd would get to within seven but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way. Rollins shot 58.5 percent as a team, 35.3 percent (6-17) from the 3-point line, and 52.6 percent (10-19) at the free throw line. Rollins had a huge advantage in the paint (42-16) and had nine assists to go with just four turnovers. Eckerd did not score any points off those four Rollins turnovers. Butkus was 11-11 from the floor and 3-3 from the 3-point line in the win. His only blemishes on the night were at the free throw line where he went 2-5.
The Tritons were led by Placide and Baker. Baker was a perfect 10-10 at the free throw line on the night. Eckerd shot 39.2 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (10-30) from the 3-point line, and 77.3 percent (17-22) at the free throw line. The Tritons won the rebounding battle 34-27. They had nine assists and 10 turnovers on the night. Of those 10 turnovers Rollins converted them into 10 points. Eckerd did not have a single fast break point in the contest.
