Spark From Bench And Rebounding Power Tars To Crucial Home Win

Basketball has a funny way of working itself. Both the Rollins College Tars and Barry Buccaneers were short-handed on Saturday, each team missing a key player due to injury. Rollins was +18 on the boards (43-25) and got a spark from Michael Niemann, who had a career high 11 points off the bench as they picked up a 90-80 win at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center. With the win Rollins improves to 12-8 and 5-6 in the SSC. Barry falls to 8-11 and 4-7 in the SSC following the defeat.

In a game that featured three ties and seven lead changes the two teams traded baskets early. Down 10-6 Rollins would get a 3-pointer from Mateus Malovec followed by a Beau Frericks triple to take a 12-10 lead with 15:41 in the first half. Michael Bradley came off the bench to knock down a three to give Barry the lead back on the ensuing possession. Bradley and Sergey Grishaev traded 3-balls and then the Tars got the spark they were looking for from the bench. Michael Kalina knocked down a three, and had a layup to give the Tars a four point lead. Niemann hit a jumper and a triple to give Rollins a 30-23 advantage with 7:25 to play in the opening half. The lead would grow to 11 (37-26) as Emillis Butkus scored for the Tars at the 5:03 mark of the opening half. The Tars then caught fire from long range as Niemann, Frericks, and Butkus all hit triples to give the Tars a 46-30 lead. Barry would go on a 7-0 run to end the half to cut the Tars lead nine (46-37) as Gabe Hernandez made a layup right before halftime. Rollins shot 56.7 percent in the opening half, 58.8 percent (10-17) from the 3-point line, and made both free throws they attempted in the opening stanza. Barry shot 42.9 percent from the field, 36.3 percent (4-11) from the 3-point line, and 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line in the opening half.

The run continued for Barry to start the second half as they pulled to within one (48-47) on a Jimel Lane dunk off of a Bradley steal. Rollins stretched the lead back to five (54-49) on a Frericks layup at the 16:12 mark. Once again the Bucs would get to within one (64-63) on a pair of free throws by Ga'Khari Lacount four minutes later. A triple by Bradley at the 10:06 mark knotted the game at 68. A personal 5-0 run by Malovec sparked a 11-0 Tars run capped by an old fashioned three-point play by Butkus and a free throw by Frericks that put the Tars in control at the 4:34 mark. Barry would not go away as they scored the next six points to make it 79-74 Rollins after a dunk by Adran Roberts with 2:28 to go. Rollins would ice this one at the free throw line to seal a big conference win. Frericks led five Tars in double figures with 22 points, Butkus notched 20 points, five rebounds and five assists, Grishaev tallied 13 to go with eight rebounds, Malovec had 12, and Niemann netted 11. Rollins shot 52.6 percent from the floor, 50 percent (13-26) from the 3-point line, and 81 percent (17-21) at the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 43-25. they had 25 assists, and 13 turnovers in the contest.

Barry was paced by Lane who had 26, Bradley knocked down seven triples on his way to 25, and Sami Elkamel added 13. The Bucs shot 45.7 percent from the field, 34.8 percent (8-23) from the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the free throw line. They had 13 assists and just three turnovers in the contest.
