Finding A Way To Win. Rollins Sneaks Past Florida Tech.
The Rollins College Tars and Florida Tech Panthers met for the second time this season on Wednesday at Warden Arena. The game tonight was nothing like the first meeting between the two teams but the result was the same, a Rollins win. "It wasn't our best effort but we found a way to win," Rollins assistant coach Kyle Frakes said in his postgame interview with Robert Segal and Jim "Shooter" Ferro. Rollins got 17 points from John Latimer and Emillis Butkus while Sergey Grishav added 14 points and 11 rebounds in the 71-69 win. Rollins improved to 14-8 on the year and 7-6 in the SSC. Florida Tech got 19 points from Donovan Brown, Xavier Ford-Belton had 16, Logan Allen notched 12 to go along with 13 rebounds, and Max Polk netted 10. With the loss Florida Tech falls to 4-18 and 1-13 in the SSC.
In a game that featured 12 ties and four lead changes it started at a pace that the Panthers hoped for. After A Brown three-point play the Panthers led 7-4 with 16:09 left in the opening half. Rollins would battle back and knot the game at 11 on a Latimer free throw with 13:32 until halftime. Polk made a layup to stretch the lead and after a tip in by Donovan Murphy and a Polk jumper it was a six point Tech lead (25-19) with 6:50 left in the half. At the half it would be 33-30 in favor of the Panthers. Rollins shot 29 percent from the field and 18 percent (2-11) from the 3-point line to go along with 66.7 percent (10-15) at the free throw line in the opening stanza. Tech shot 42.4 percent from the field, 12.5 percent (1-8) from the 3-point line and 80 percent (4-5) from the free throw line in the opening half.
Rollins came out with much better energy to start the second half as a Latimer triple and layup by Grishaev would give them the lead back. A triple by Matus Malovec would give Rollins a brief 3-point lead but Polk would answer to tie the score with 17:03 to go. Rollins would run off four straight points as Beau Frericks made a layup and a tip in by Grishaev made it a 46-42 Tars lead with 14:44 to go. Again the Panthers battled back to knot the game at 49 on a Ford-Belton hoop with 10:54 on the clock. The game was still tied, this time at 56 when Isaiah Edden scored for the Panthers at the 7:05 mark. A three-point play by Brown would be answered by Latimer who scored and was fouled, he converted the free throw to tie the game at 59. Again the game was tied, this time at 63 after an Allen layup with 3:37 in regulation. Butkus would give Rollins the lead back on a layup and after a Grishaev block Butkus would again get into the paint and score to give the Tars a 67-63 lead with 2:50 left. The Rollins lead would grow to five (69-64) on two free throws by Grishaev at the 2:16 mark. Brown would score for Tech and then Ford-Belton would make a layup and the visitors were within one (69-68) with 1:14 on the clock. Rollins would not give up any more points the rest of the way and would get a free throw from Frericks with 1.5 seconds left to account for the 70-68 final.
Latimer was 7-15 on his way to 17 points, Butkus was 6-15 on his way to 17, while Grishaev had 14 and 11 rebounds despite a rough first half. "Credit to Sergey, he started out 0-5 and did not hang his head, ended up having 14-11 tonight," Frakes explained. Rollins shot 38.1 percent as a team, 27.8 percent (5-18) from the 3-point line, and 63 percent (17-27) from the free throw line. Rollins won the rebounding battle 43-38. They had 22 second chance points to four for the Panthers. Rollins had 11 assists and five turnovers in the contest.
Brown was 8-14 on his way to 19 points for the Panthers, Ford-Belton was an efficient 7-10 for his 16 points although he was just 2-5 from the free throw line, Allen added a double-double, and Polk was 4-12 from the field to score 10 points. The Panthers shot 46.8 percent from the field, 16.7 percent (2-12) from the 3-point line, and 61.5 percent (8-12) from the free throw line. Tech had nine assists and six turnovers in the contest.
