Five Score In Double Digits As Rollins Falls In Boca.
The Rolins College Tars and the Lynn University Fighting Knights met Saturday in a potential preview of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. If the season ended Saturday the third seed Lynn would face the sixth seeded Tars. Saturday five Tars scored in double figures at the De'Hoernle Center but they feel 94-84 to the Fighting Knights on senior day in Boca Raton. With the loss Rollins falls to 15-10 and 8-8 in the SSC. Lynn improves to 16-7 and 11-6 in the SSC after the win.
Rollins led 9-4 early on after a Beau Frerikcs jumper and a Matus Malovec triple at the 17:06 mark of the opening half. The two teams traded runs before the Fighting Knights got hot from distance. Carson Smith, Jordan Wilkins, and Sveinn Birgisson each hit 3-pointers to give Lynn a 21-13 lead with 12:23 left in the half. Rollins ran off the next seven points as a Emillis Butkus 3-ball cut the Lynn lead to 21-20 halfway though the opening frame. The hot shooting from long range continued for Lynn as they led 37-28 after another Wilkins three. Malovec scored on an old fashioned three-point play and a triple by Sergey Grishaev made it 37-34 Lynn at the 5:26 mark of the first half. The lead grew to 10 on another three and the Fighting Knights took a 12 point lead (53-41) into the locker room. Rollins shot 50 percent from the field in the opening half but struggled from the 3-point line where they shot just 27.3 percent (3-11) in the first 20 minutes. Rollins did go a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the half. Lynn shot 48.8 percent from the field, 36.7 percent (11-30) from the 3-point line and 0-1 from the free throw line in the half. The Lynn lead grew to 19 (68-49) as Osei Price knocked down a three at the 14:05 mark. The lead ballooned to 22 before the Tars got to within 13 (after a Michael Niemann trey at the 7:24 mark. Rollins would pull to within five (81-76) after a Latimer free throw at the 3:36 mark. The Tars would get the lead down to four (86-82) after a Frericks layup but Lynn would knock down free throws down the stretch to secure the season sweep. Frericks led the Tars with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, while Latimer also added 18. Butkus tallied 15, Grishaev notched 14, and Malovec scored 10 in the loss. Rollins shot 50 percent from the field, 23.8 percent (5-21) from the 3-point line, and 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line. They had 13 assists and 11 turnovers in the contest.
Lynn was paced by Leo Beath with 29, Wilkins had 21, Smith added 13, and Birgisson scored 11. Osei Price and JP Baron each had 10 rebounds while Smith dished out eight assists. The Fighting Knights shot 40.7 percent from the field, 28.8 percent (15-52) from the 3-point line, and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the free throw line. Lynn won the rebounding battle 44-35. They had 22 assists and four turnovers in the contest.
Rollins will be back in action Wednesday when they host Eckerd. Tip time is slated for 7:30 PM.
