Latimer Returns In Rollins Upset Of PBA

The Rollins College Tars had lost five straight and 10 out of the last 11 meetings with the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The Tars exercised some demons and John Latimer returned after missing a pair of games with an injury. Rollins would ultimately walk out of Rubin Arena with a 73-69 win Saturday. With the win Rollins improves to 13-8 overall and got to back to .500 (6-6) in the SSC. PBA fell to 15-6 and 8-5 in the SSC after a third straight loss.

In a game that featured 14 ties and 19 lead changes it started on the see-saw right from the jump. Rollins led 8-5 early after a Beau Frericks triple, but the next five points went to the Sailfish as they led 10-8. After a three-point play by Latimer at the 9:46 mark of the first half Rollins led 19-17. The see-saw continued as it would be PBA that led 24-21 after a Josh Ward layup with 6:17 in the half. The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the half. It would be a 35-35 game as the two teams headed to the locker room. Rollins shot 40 percent in the opening 20 minutes, 30.8 percent (4-13) from the 3-point line, and 77.8 percent (7-9) at the free throw line. PBA shot 37.5 percent in the first half, 8.3 percent (1-12) from the 3-point line, and 10-12 (83.3 percent at the free throw line.)

The back and forth action continued as it was PBA who grabbed a 46-43 lead on a Tyler Burton layup with 15:07 to go. Rollins went on a quick 7-0 burst as Sergey Grishaev scored, Ian Hart gave the Tars the lead back with a three and Matus Malovec hit two free throws with 10:37 left. The Tars maintained the lead and had a 60-53 edge after a Frericks layup with 4:38 on the clock. The Sailfish would battle back and tie the game at 61 on a Jose Tanchyn layup. They took the lead 63-61 as  Ward scored with 2:20 to go. Emillis Butkus drained a triple for Rollins to give them the lead back (64-63) at the 1:59 mark. After a defensive stop the Tars got three points the old fashioned way as Grishaev scored and was fouled. He converted the free throw at the 1:14 mark. Latimer then came up with a steal that led to a Frericks jumper to stretch the lead to six (69-63) with 33 ticks on the clock. Tyson Butler cut the lead in half but Butkus would calmly drain a pair of free throws. Another triple by Burton would cut the lead to two with 11 seconds to go. Rollins would then get the ball in to Frericks and he drained a pair of free throws to seal this one.

Frericks led the Tars with 18 points. He was ultra efficient on the day as he went 6-7 from the field, 1-1 from three, and 5-5 at the free throw line. Butkus added 17, Latimer notched 13 and had four big steals, while Grishaev scored nine points but grabbed a team high 13 rebounds. Rollins shot 43.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (20-25) at the free throw line. Rollins had 10 assists and 12 turnovers in the game.

The Sailfish were paced by Ward with 18, Tanchyn had 13, while both Graham Worland and Tyler Burton netted 10. Tanchyn had a team leading 15 rebounds and Ward led the way with five assists. PBA shot 39.4 percent as a team, 21.7 percent (5-23) from the 3-point line, and 85.7 percent (12-14) at the free throw line. They won the rebounding battle 41-33. PBA had 12 assists and 12 turnovers in this one.
