Rollins Falls After Cold Shooting Second Half on Senior Night

 The Rollins College Tars and Florida Southern Moccasins did battle at Warden Arena inside the Alfond Sports Center on Wednesday night. Prior to the game three players from Rollins were honored prior to what would be their final home game in WinterPark. Beau Frericks, Sergey Grishaev, and Braxton Barnhizer each started on señior night. A spirited crowd filled up Warden Arena but it was Florida Southern that came away with the 93-79 win. With the loss Rollins falls to 16-12 and 9-10 in the SSC. The Tars in the process fall to seventh place in the SSC. The Mocs improve to 22-7 and 13-6 in the SSC. They remain in a tie with Lynn for second place in the conference (FSC holds the tiebreaker.) The Mocs also were third in the latest release of the South region rankings that came out prior to Wednesday's contest. 

 Three Rollins players scored in double figures in this one. Frericks led the way with 22, Grishaev added 18, and Emillis Butkus tallied 15. The game started out fast paced for both teams. Rollins had an early 8-5 lead after a Frericks jumper just over two minutes in. The Mocs then started knocking down shots and took a 15-10 lead after a Dominick Denny triple at the 15:26 mark of the opening half. Rollins battled back and Ian Hart hit a three to give the Tars a 21-19 lead with 12:40 until halftime. The see-saw affair continued for the next several minutes and Rollins knotted the game at 31 after Frericks scored with 6:19 left in the half. After Grishaev hit a pair of free throws and John Latimer hit a bucket the Tars had a 37-33 edge with 4:21 left in the half. The next four points went to the Mocs but Rollins retook the lead (39-37) on a Butkus jumper at the 3:17 mark of the opening half. The rest of the half belonged to the Mocs as they took a 48-43 lead into the locker room. Rollins shot 56.25 percent in the opening half, 33.3 percent (4-12) from the 3-point line, and made all three free throws they attempted in the half. The Mocs shot 51.4 percent from the field, 42.86 percent (6-14) from the 3-point line, and made all six free throws in the half. 

 Frericks hit two free throws to start the second half but six straight Southern points would stretch the lead back to 11. After Michael Niemann hit a jumper and a triple the Tars were within six (56-50) at the 15:40 mark. After Joe Moon hit a three Rollins went on a quick 5-0 spurt as Grishaev hit a jumper and a trey to make it 59-55 FSC at the 13:13 mark. After a basket by the Mocs William Jobe hit a pair of free throws to cut it to four but Rollins would get no closer as Amare Miller made a layup and Jadin Booth scored the next four points to stretch the lead back to double digits. A jumper by Ian Hart would be answered by a triple by Denny at the 11:35 mark (70-59 FSC.) Rollins would get to within single digits one more time but the Mocs had all the answers and walked out of Winter Park with the win. Rollins had three players score in double digits. They shot 46.9 percent from the field (37.5 percent second half,) 30.4 percent (7-23) from the 3-point line, and 85.7 percent (12-14) at the free throw line. The Tars and Mocs each had 36 rebounds. Rollins had 10 assists and 13 turnovers in the loss. 

 For the Mocs Alex Steen had 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, Peyton Gerald netted 18 to go with nine assists,  Denny scored 16, and Jadin Booth contributed 15. The Mocs shot 50 percent from the field, 34.8 percent (8-23) from the 3-point line, and 86.4 percent (19-22) from the free throw line. They had 23 assists and seven turnovers in the contest. 

Rollins will close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to #2 Nova Southeastern. Tip time is slated for 4 PM.
