Rollins Routs Tampa To Split Season Series And Win Fourth Straight.

The Rollins College Tars and the University of Tampa Spartans did battle on Saturday at Warden Arena. Rollins came into Saturday seeking revenge after a seven point loss a little over a month ago and they did just that in a 95-78 rout of the Spartans. With a fourth straight win and seventh in the past nine contests Rollins improves to 15-8 and 8-6 in the SSC. Tampa falls to 14-9 and 6-9 in the SSC as they lost a fourth straight game.

Rollins had five players score in double figures in the win. Tampa had just two players score in double figures in the loss. Both teams got off to a slow start as it was Beau Frericks who got Rollins on the board with a layup 1:21 in. After a pair of free throws by Kaden Froebe the Spartans had an 11-7 lead at the 15:43 mark of the first half. The Tars got a triple from Emillis Butkus that tied the game at 16 at the 12:24 mark of the first half. Dylan Wolle then gave Rollins the lead with a three of his own. After a John Latimer layup he was fouled, he converted the free throw to give Rollins a 24-20 lead with 10:42 in the opening half. Both teams would go cold until Matus Malovec hit a triple for the Tars to make it 27-20 with 9:35 in the half. William Jobe added a tip in, Butkus made a layup, and a 3-pointer to make it 34-20 with 7:46 in the half. Grady Schwartz made a free throw for the Spartans that was the first point they scored in nearly four minutes. A triple by Amarion Nimmers was the first field goal for UT since the 10:42 mark of the half. Rollins went on another 11-0 run to take a 21 point lead (45-24) after Michael Niemann hit a pair of free throws at the four minute mark of the opening half. Rollins would take a 52-39 lead into halftime. Rollins was led by a trio of players who scored nine points in the opening half (Grishaev, Frericks, and Latimer,) Butkus had 8, and Malovec added seven. The Tars shot 53.1 percent in the first half, 46.7 percent (7-15) from the 3-point line, and 84.6 percent (11-13) at the free throw line in the half. Tyson Leitao was the only Tampa player in double figures in the first half as he scored 14. Froebe added seven. UT shot a frigid 23.3 percent from the floor, 20 percent (3-15) from the 3-point line, and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.

The Rollins lead was 16 (60-44) after a Latimer 3-ball with 17:09 to go. Latimer would knock down another triple and then Niemann would score the next five points for the Tars. The cold shooting of the Spartans continued as the Tars lead grew to 27 (75-48) after a Frericks triple with 11:36 to go. Niemann all but put the game away with a triple at the 9:10 mark that gave Rollins a 30 point lead (80-50.) The biggest Tars lead would be 31 as they would cruise to a fourth straight win. Rollins was paced by Latimer who had 16 of his 25 points in the second half, Butkus netted 15, Grishaev had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the second straight game, while Frericks and Niemann each tallied 12. Rollins shot 53.6 percent from the field, 50 percent (13-26) from the 3-point line, 81.5 percent (22-27) from the free throw line, they won the rebounding battle 45-43. The Tars had 14 assists and 16 turnovers in the contest.

Trey Lane led UT with 16 points while Leitao had 15. Tampa shot 30.8 percent from the floor, 22.6 percent (7-31) from the 3-point line, and 67.6 percent (23-34) at the free throw line. The Spartans had 14 assists and nine turnovers in the contest.
